Evening settles over the neighborhood.
Inside her room, Brooke sits on the edge of her bed, scrolling through her phone.
Her phone suddenly rings.
BROOKE
Sharra? What happened? Why are you calling me this late?
There is silence on the other end.
SHARRA
Brooke… I need to tell you something.
BROOKE
What happened?
SHARRA
Bethany said something about me.
BROOKE
What did she say?
SHARRA
She told you that I’m just like her… that I go around with every guy and spend nights with them.
Brooke freezes.
BROOKE
She said that about you?
SHARRA
Yes. And I’m not going to stay quiet anymore.
BROOKE
Sharra, please calm down.
SHARRA
No, Brooke. I’ve stayed quiet long enough.
BROOKE
Where are you going?
SHARRA
I’m going to Bethany’s house.
The call ends.
Brooke stares at the phone.

SCENE 2 — BETHANY’S HOUSE
Bethany is sitting in the living room. The house is quiet.
Suddenly—
KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!
Bethany opens the door and sees Sharra standing outside.
BETHANY
Sharra? What are you doing here?
SHARRA
I came to ask you one question.
BETHANY
What question?
SHARRA
Why did you call me a bad woman?
Bethany’s expression becomes defensive.
BETHANY
Who told you that?
SHARRA
Brooke told me.
BETHANY
I was talking to Brooke. I didn’t expect her to repeat everything.
SHARRA
So you admit you said it?
Bethany remains silent.
SHARRA
You had no right to talk about me like that!
BETHANY
And you had no right to come into my house and shout at me!
SCENE 3 — THE CONFRONTATION
SHARRA
You think you can say anything about me because I’m not standing there?
BETHANY
I said what I believed was true.
SHARRA
You don’t know anything about my life!
BETHANY
I know enough.
Sharra’s eyes fill with anger.
SHARRA
Take that back.
BETHANY
No.
SHARRA
Take it back!
BETHANY
I won’t.
The argument suddenly becomes louder.
SCENE 4 — BROOKE’S DECISION
Meanwhile, Brooke is still at home.
She calls Sharra again. No answer.
She calls Bethany. No answer.
Brooke suddenly hears shouting through the phone.
BROOKE
Mom?
Brooke immediately hangs up.
She grabs her phone and makes a decision.
Brooke calls the police.
SCENE 5 — THE POLICE ARRIVE
Several minutes later, red and blue lights flash outside the house.
Two police officers walk toward the front door.
KNOCK! KNOCK!
OFFICER
Police. Please open the door.
BETHANY
Who is that?
OFFICER
We received a call about a disturbance.
The officers enter and separate Bethany and Sharra.
BETHANY
She came into my house and started this!
SHARRA
That’s not what happened.
OFFICER
Everyone calm down.
SCENE 6 — BROOKE SPEAKS
Brooke arrives moments later.
BROOKE
I called the police.
BETHANY
You called them?
BROOKE
I heard you both fighting. I was scared something worse would happen.
BETHANY
Brooke… you should have come here first.
BROOKE
I tried calling both of you. Nobody answered.
The officer asks everyone to explain what happened.
BROOKE
Sharra called me and told me that Bethany had said those things about her.
SCENE 7 — THE HANDCUFFS
The officers separate the two women.
BETHANY
Am I being arrested?
The officer reaches for the handcuffs.
BROOKE
Wait!
The handcuffs are placed around Bethany’s wrists.
BETHANY
Why are you doing this?
OFFICER
You’re being taken in while the situation is investigated.
BROOKE
Mom, I’m sorry.
BETHANY
Don’t cry. You did what you thought was right.
SCENE 8 — OUTSIDE THE HOUSE
Bethany is escorted outside.
The police lights continue flashing.
BROOKE
Mom!
BETHANY
Take care of yourself.
BROOKE
I never wanted this to happen.
BETHANY
Sometimes one sentence can destroy an entire family.
The police vehicle drives away.
SCENE 9 — THE UNEXPECTED CALL
Later that night, Brooke sits alone in the living room.
Suddenly—RING!
BROOKE
Hello?
UNKNOWN MAN
Brooke… you need to listen carefully.
BROOKE
Who is this?
UNKNOWN MAN
Don’t tell Sharra.
BROOKE
What are you talking about?
UNKNOWN MAN
The police didn’t arrest Bethany because of what happened tonight.
BROOKE
Then why did they take her?
UNKNOWN MAN
Because someone filed a complaint against her earlier.
BROOKE
Who?
UNKNOWN MAN
Someone very close to your family.
The call suddenly ends.
Brooke stares at her phone.
Then—KNOCK! KNOCK!
Brooke slowly walks toward the door.
Someone is standing outside.
Someone she never expected to see.
Brooke looks through the window.
BROOKE
You?
The person outside raises a hand toward the door.
And just before Brooke opens it… THE SCREEN CUTS TO BLACK.
