The police station door slammed shut behind Larry. He had come to bring Sharra’s mother home. But before the night was over, Larry would discover that her arrest was only the beginning.
THE ARGUMENT

Sharra stood face-to-face with Bethany, her eyes filled with anger and tears.

SHARRA
“My mother is in jail because of you!”
BETHANY
“What? I had nothing to do with it.”

Their voices grew louder as Larry watched from nearby.

SHARRA
“You went to your father and had him get my mother arrested!”
BETHANY
“I swear I didn’t!”

Larry finally stepped between them.

LARRY
“Enough! Fighting each other isn’t going to bring her mother home.”

Sharra looked at Larry through her tears.

SHARRA
“Then please bring my mother home.”
LARRY
“I will.”
LARRY’S PLEA

Larry arrived at Mr. Newburger’s house and immediately dropped to his knees.

MR. NEWBURGER
“Larry, get up.”
LARRY
“Please. Come with me to the police station.”

Mr. Newburger looked at him in silence.

LARRY
“Sharra’s mother is behind bars. Please help me.”

After a long silence, Mr. Newburger finally nodded.

MR. NEWBURGER
“Fine. I’ll come.”
THE POLICE STATION

Larry and Mr. Newburger entered the police station.

LARRY
“We’re here about Sharra’s mother.”
POLICE OFFICER
“She’s still in custody.”
LARRY
“We want her released.”

The officer slowly opened a thick case file.

POLICE OFFICER
“This isn’t your father’s house. You can’t have someone arrested and then come here demanding that we release them.”
LARRY
“We didn’t have her arrested!”
POLICE OFFICER
“Then someone did.”
THE WARNING

Larry finally reached Sharra’s mother behind the bars.

LARRY
“I’m here to take you home.”
SHARRA’S MOTHER
“No. You shouldn’t have come here.”
LARRY
“Why?”
SHARRA’S MOTHER
“Bethany didn’t do this.”

Larry stared at her.

SHARRA’S MOTHER
“Someone wants Sharra to hate Bethany.”
LARRY
“Who?”

She looked toward the hallway, terrified.

SHARRA’S MOTHER
“Don’t trust anyone.”
THE SECRET FILE

The police officer returned with another document.

POLICE OFFICER
“There’s something else.”

Larry looked at the paper and suddenly froze.

LARRY
“Why is Mr. Newburger’s name here?”

Mr. Newburger said nothing.

POLICE OFFICER
“Someone gave us information about the arrest.”
LARRY
“Who?”
POLICE OFFICER
“Bethany.”

Larry’s phone suddenly started ringing.

BETHANY
“Larry… get out of the police station.”
LARRY
“Why?”
BETHANY
“Don’t trust my father.”

The call suddenly ended.

THE FINAL SECRET
The lights suddenly went out. When they came back on, Mr. Newburger was gone. Sharra’s mother was gone too. Larry’s phone received one final message:

“You brought the wrong man to the police station.”

Larry stared at the empty hallway. For the first time, he realized that Sharra’s mother had never been the real target. She had only been the beginning.

But where had Mr. Newburger gone? And why had Bethany warned Larry not to trust her own father?
