THE SLAP THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
The slap echoed through Larry’s house.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

But the slap wasn’t the most shocking thing that happened that evening.
It was what Brooke discovered after she walked out the door.

Brooke stood frozen, one hand pressed against her cheek. Bethany stared at her, breathing heavily.

Something Larry had hidden for years was about to come crashing into their lives.

THE ARGUMENT

The evening had started quietly. The house was unusually still. Larry was away, and Bethany was standing in the living room, facing Brooke.

Bethany “Brooke, if you think I traced your grandmother’s location, you’re wrong. I never did that.”
Brooke “Stop lying to me!”
Bethany “I’m not lying.”
Brooke “You expect me to believe that?”

Brooke stepped closer.

Brooke “My grandmother disappeared, and then somehow the police found her. You knew where she was!”

Bethany’s expression changed. For a moment, she looked nervous.

Brooke “See? You’re hiding something.”
Bethany “I am not hiding anything from you.”
Brooke “Then tell me the truth!”

Bethany looked away. Brooke’s anger grew.

Brooke “You always do this! Whenever something goes wrong, you pretend you know nothing!”

Bethany finally snapped. Her hand moved before she could stop herself.

SLAP.

The sound filled the room. Brooke froze. Her eyes widened in disbelief. Bethany immediately realized what she had done.

Bethany “Brooke…”
Brooke “You slapped me?”
Brooke slowly touched her cheek. Her eyes filled with tears, but her anger was stronger than her pain.
Brooke “Don’t touch me.”
BROOKE LEAVES
Brooke “To my mother Sharra’s house.”

Bethany’s face became tense.

Bethany “You’re not leaving this house like this.”
Brooke “Watch me.”

Brooke called Cam and told him to come pick her up. Bethany followed her toward the hallway.

Bethany “You’re angry right now. You don’t know what you’re doing.”
Brooke “I know exactly what I’m doing.”
Brooke “I’m getting away from you.”

Outside, headlights appeared through the window. Cam had arrived.

Bethany “You’re not going anywhere with some boy.”
Brooke “You don’t have the right to control me.”
Bethany “I’m trying to protect you.”
Brooke “From what?”
Bethany went silent. Brooke noticed the hesitation.
Brooke “What are you so afraid of?”

Brooke reached for the door. Bethany grabbed her arm. Brooke pulled away.

Brooke “Let go!”

Bethany released her. For a moment, the two women stared at each other.

SLAP.

Bethany’s face turned to the side. Silence. Brooke was shaking.

Brooke “Don’t ever try to control me again.”

She opened the door and walked out. Cam stepped out of his car and helped her with the bags.

THE WARNING

After Brooke left, Bethany closed the door. The moment the lock clicked, her expression changed.

Bethany’s hands were trembling.
Bethany “She can’t go to Sharra.”
Bethany “Not tonight.”

Meanwhile, Cam’s car moved through the dark streets. Brooke sat silently in the passenger seat.

LARRY’S CALL

At Larry’s house, Bethany’s phone rang. She looked at the screen.

Larry.
Larry “Where is Brooke?”
Bethany “She left.”
Larry “What?”
Bethany “She went with Cam.”
Larry “Do not let Brooke go to Sharra’s house.”
Bethany “She’s already on her way.”
Bethany “Why can’t she go to Sharra?”
Larry “Because Sharra doesn’t know the truth.”
“What truth?”

Larry ended the call. Bethany slowly lowered the phone. Her expression was filled with fear.

SHARRA’S HOUSE

Cam’s car finally reached Sharra’s neighborhood. Brooke immediately noticed something was wrong.

Sharra’s house was completely dark. No lights. No movement. No car outside.

Brooke called Sharra again. There was no answer.

Brooke “This isn’t right.”

Brooke and Cam walked toward the front door. Brooke knocked. Nothing.

She tried the handle. The door opened.

The house was dark. Inside, everything looked disturbed.

A chair was overturned. A lamp lay broken on the floor.

Brooke “Mom?”

Then Brooke saw something on the floor. A phone.

It belonged to Sharra. The screen was cracked. There was one unread message.
Brooke “She was trying to contact me.”

Suddenly, Brooke and Cam heard footsteps from the hallway.

Someone was inside the house.
THE UNKNOWN MAN

Brooke’s phone suddenly rang. The screen showed:

UNKNOWN NUMBER
Unknown Man “Brooke…”
Brooke “Who is this?”
Unknown Man “You should never have left Larry’s house tonight.”
The call ended.

Suddenly, the lights in Sharra’s house flickered on. At the end of the hallway stood a man.

Cam “Who are you?”

The man took one slow step forward. Brooke stared at him. Then she recognized something about him.

Brooke “No…”
Unknown Man “Your father never told you who I was, did he?”
Brooke “Larry…”
Unknown Man “Ask Larry why he was so desperate to keep you away from Sharra.”
LARRY ARRIVES

At that exact moment, Larry’s car stopped outside the house. He stepped out. Bethany was sitting beside him.

Larry “We’re too late.”
Bethany “Who is that man?”

Larry didn’t answer. His expression revealed something Bethany had never seen before.

FEAR.
Larry “He was never supposed to find Brooke.”
THE GRANDMOTHER

Inside the house, Brooke stared at the stranger. Then a sudden noise came from upstairs.

Brooke “There’s someone upstairs.”
Unknown Man “Yes.”

He looked toward the staircase.

Unknown Man “And she has been waiting for you.”

Brooke’s heart pounded. Larry rushed through the front door.

Larry “BROOKE! GET AWAY FROM HIM!”

Brooke turned toward Larry. Before she could move, a woman slowly appeared at the top of the stairs.

Brooke stared. Her face went white.
Brooke “Grandma?”
Grandmother “Larry lied about everything.”
The room fell silent.

Larry stopped moving. Bethany covered her mouth.

Unknown Man “Brooke… your grandmother wasn’t the one Larry was trying to protect.”
Unknown Man “He was protecting you.”
A sudden noise came from upstairs. Someone else was walking across the floor.
Brooke “There’s someone upstairs.”
Unknown Man “Yes.”
Unknown Man “And she has been waiting for you.”
Brooke finally realized the truth about her grandmother’s disappearance was only the beginning.

Because whatever Larry had been hiding all these years… was now standing directly in front of Brooke.

And the next secret was about to reveal why Brooke had been the real target all along.
