BROOKE’S DECISION CHANGES EVERYTHING
The words Brooke had just spoken were about to change everything inside the house.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
THE LINE BROOKE CROSSED
Bethany stood frozen near the living room doorway, staring at Brooke as if she could not believe what she had just heard. Larry was between them, trying to understand how a simple argument had turned into something much bigger.
But Brooke had already made her decision.
BROOKE“Please, Bethany… just leave this house. I don’t want you here anymore.”
The room went completely silent.
LARRY“Brooke, what are you saying?”
Brooke avoided his eyes.
LARRY“She is your stepmother. She’s been part of this family for years. How can you stand there and tell her to leave?”
Brooke folded her arms.
BROOKE“Because I don’t want her here.”
Larry took a breath, trying desperately not to lose his temper.
LARRY“You don’t get to decide that.”
Brooke finally looked at him.
BROOKE“Why not? It’s my home too.”
Larry stared at her. For a moment, he had no answer.
The tension between them had been building for days, but tonight it felt different. This wasn’t just another argument.
This was a line Brooke had crossed.
And everyone in the room knew it.
THE ARGUMENT GETS WORSE
LARRY“Listen to me. Whatever you’re angry about, we can talk about it.”
Brooke shook her head.
BROOKE“No. I’ve talked enough.”
LARRY“You haven’t listened.”
BROOKE“Because nobody listens to me either.”
Bethany remained silent. She watched Larry trying to calm Brooke, but Brooke seemed determined to reject every word.
LARRY“Brooke, I’m asking you to calm down.”
BROOKE“And I’m asking you to stop defending her.”
LARRY“I’m not defending anyone. I’m trying to keep this family from falling apart.”
BROOKE“Maybe it’s already falling apart.”
Those words hit Larry harder than he expected. His face fell. Bethany noticed it immediately.
BETHANY“Larry…”
Larry raised his hand slightly. He didn’t want her to interrupt. He wanted to hear Brooke, even if what she was saying hurt.
LARRY“Tell me what happened.”
Brooke remained quiet.
LARRY“Tell me why you suddenly want Bethany out of this house.”
Brooke looked toward Bethany. There was anger in her eyes, but underneath that anger was something else. Something she wasn’t willing to admit.
BROOKE“She knows.”
BETHANY“I know what?”
BROOKE“You know exactly what.”
BETHANY“No, Brooke. I don’t.”
LARRY“Then somebody needs to explain.”
BROOKE“I don’t have to explain everything.”
LARRY“Yes, you do, if you’re asking someone to leave their home.”
BROOKE“I said what I wanted to say.”
BETHANY FINALLY SPEAKS
Bethany had remained quiet for long enough. She slowly walked toward Brooke.
Larry immediately moved slightly between them, afraid the argument would become even worse.
But Bethany stopped. She looked directly at Brooke.
BETHANY“You really want me to leave?”
Brooke didn’t answer.
BETHANY“Look at me and say it.”
Brooke finally raised her eyes.
BROOKE“Yes.”
Bethany nodded slowly. The answer hurt, but she refused to show it.
BETHANY“Okay.”
LARRY“Bethany, don’t.”
BETHANY“Don’t what?”
LARRY“Don’t make a decision while everyone is angry.”
BETHANY“I’m not making a decision because I’m angry. I’m listening to what she just told me.”
LARRY“She doesn’t know what she’s saying.”
BROOKE“Yes, I do.”
LARRY“Then why won’t you tell us why?”
Brooke opened her mouth. Nothing came out. For the first time that night, she looked uncertain.
BETHANY“That’s what I thought.”
BROOKE“Don’t act like you know me.”
BETHANY“I don’t think I know what you’re feeling anymore.”
A long silence followed.
LARRY TRIES ONE LAST TIME
Larry walked toward Brooke. His anger had disappeared. Now there was only exhaustion.
LARRY“Brooke, look at me.”
She didn’t.
LARRY“Please.”
Slowly, Brooke looked at him.
LARRY“I know you’re upset. I know you feel like nobody understands you. But pushing Bethany out isn’t going to solve whatever you’re going through.”
Brooke’s eyes became wet, but she quickly looked away.
BROOKE“You always choose her.”
LARRY“That isn’t true.”
BROOKE“It is.”
LARRY“When have I ever stopped being there for you?”
Brooke didn’t answer.
LARRY“When have I ever told you that you don’t matter?”
Still nothing.
LARRY“You’re my daughter. Nothing changes that.”
Brooke swallowed hard. For a second, it seemed like his words had reached her. But then she shook her head.
BROOKE“Then respect my decision.”
LARRY“Not when your decision is hurting someone who doesn’t deserve this.”
BROOKE“I don’t care.”
BETHANY“Don’t explain anything to her.”
LARRY“Bethany…”
BETHANY“She’s made her choice.”
BETHANY“You can keep trying to make her understand, Larry. But she’s not going to listen.”
LARRY“She will.”
BETHANY“Maybe one day. But not tonight.”
THE HOUSE GOES QUIET
Bethany slowly walked toward the hallway.
LARRY“Where are you going?”
BETHANY“To my room.”
LARRY“Please don’t pack anything.”
BETHANY“I didn’t say I was leaving.”
Larry exhaled. For the first time that evening, he looked relieved.
BROOKE“You should leave.”
LARRY“Brooke! Enough.”
His voice echoed through the room. Brooke looked surprised. She had rarely heard Larry speak to her that way.
LARRY“You don’t get to hurt people and then pretend nothing happened.”
Brooke’s eyes filled with tears.
BROOKE“You don’t understand.”
LARRY“Then help me understand!”
Brooke couldn’t. She looked toward the floor. Larry waited. Nothing.
Finally, Brooke walked toward the stairs.
LARRY“Where are you going?”
BROOKE“Upstairs.”
LARRY“We’re not finished.”
BROOKE“I am.”
She walked away. Larry remai
