nou ) Shara Came to See Brooke, But Her Fight With Bethany Went Too Far

When Shara Crossed the Line
WHEN SHARA CROSSED THE LINE
HOOK: THE HOUSE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE EMPTY…
BUT SOMEONE WAS ABOUT TO CROSS A LINE THAT COULD NEVER BE UNDONE.
SCENE 1 — THE EMPTY HOUSE

The afternoon is strangely quiet. Bethany is away from home. The front door suddenly opens, and Shara slowly walks inside. She looks around the silent house, searching for Brooke.

She did not come to start a fight. She only wanted to see her daughter.

But moments later, Bethany unexpectedly returns. She stops when she sees Shara standing inside the house.

BETHANY
Why are you in my house?
SHARA
I came to see my daughter.
BETHANY
You need to leave.
SHARA
You really don’t know how to talk to people, do you?
SCENE 2 — THE ARGUMENT BEGINS
SHARA
I didn’t come here to argue with you. I came to see Brooke.
BETHANY
Brooke isn’t here.
SHARA
Then I’ll wait for her.
BETHANY
No. You need to stop coming around Brooke.

Shara’s expression becomes serious.

SHARA
You don’t get to decide that.
BETHANY
I absolutely do when I see what you’ve done to her.
SHARA
What exactly have I done?
BETHANY
You’ve spoiled her.
SCENE 3 — WORDS THAT CROSS THE LINE

Shara tries to remain calm, but Bethany keeps pushing.

BETHANY
Brooke should stop following you around.
SHARA
She’s my daughter.
BETHANY
And you’re teaching her all the wrong things.

Shara’s jaw tightens.

BETHANY
Brooke has started acting just like you.

Shara freezes.

BETHANY
She likes running around with boys, going wherever she wants, and she doesn’t even know what she wants to do with her future.
BETHANY
Just like you.
SHARA
Take that back.
SCENE 4 — EVERYTHING FALLS APART

Shara moves toward the door. For a moment, it looks like she is actually going to leave.

Then Bethany says one more thing.

BETHANY
Maybe Brooke would have a better future if she stopped listening to you.

Shara suddenly turns around. The argument becomes physical. A chair is pushed across the room.

BETHANY
Shara! What are you doing?

Shara restrains Bethany against the chair. Bethany struggles, frightened by how far the confrontation has gone.

BETHANY
Let me go!
SHARA
You should have stopped talking.
SCENE 5 — THE THREAT

Bethany notices Shara moving toward the electrical outlet. Her breathing becomes faster.

BETHANY
Don’t do this.
SHARA
You humiliated me.
BETHANY
I was angry. I shouldn’t have said those things.
SHARA
You called my daughter just like me.

Bethany begs Shara to stop. The lights flicker.

SUSPENSE: THEN THE LIGHTS GO OUT…

A sudden electrical incident fills the room with chaos. Bethany cries out, while Shara realizes that the situation has gone far beyond an argument.

SCENE 6 — THE DOOR

Outside, a car slows down near the house. A vehicle door closes. Someone walks toward the front entrance.

Inside, Shara doesn’t hear it. Bethany does.

BETHANY
Someone’s here.

Shara freezes. Footsteps approach the door. A hand reaches for the door handle.

The door begins to open.

SCENE 7 — BROOKE RETURNS

Brooke steps inside and immediately senses that something is wrong.

BROOKE
Mom?

No answer.

BROOKE
Mom, where are you?

Brooke hears a faint sound from another room. She walks toward it.

Then she sees her mother. Her expression completely changes.

BROOKE
Oh my God!
BROOKE
What did you do?
SHARA
I didn’t mean for this to happen.
SCENE 8 — THE PHONE CALL

Brooke immediately grabs her phone.

BROOKE
I’m calling for help.
SHARA
Brooke, wait.
BROOKE
No. This isn’t something we can hide.

Brooke calls Larry. The phone rings several times before he answers.

LARRY
Brooke? What’s wrong?
BROOKE
Dad… you need to come home.
LARRY
Why? What happened?
BROOKE
Something terrible happened between Mom and Shara.
SCENE 9 — THE AFTERMATH

Soon, the house fills with emergency responders. Bethany is helped away from the chair. Brooke stays beside her mother.

Shara stands silently near the wall. She finally understands how serious the situation has become.

SHARA
Brooke… I’m sorry.
BROOKE
You were angry at my mom.
SHARA
I know.
BROOKE
But you hurt yourself too.
SCENE 10 — LARRY ARRIVES

The front door suddenly opens. Larry rushes inside.

LARRY
Bethany!

He sees Bethany and immediately becomes alarmed. Then he notices Shara.

LARRY
Shara… what happened here?

Brooke steps between them.

BROOKE
Dad, please. Let the authorities handle it.

Larry takes a deep breath. The entire house falls silent.

SCENE 11 — THE UNANSWERED QUESTION

Later that night, the house is almost empty. Bethany is receiving medical care. Larry is still trying to understand what happened.

Brooke sits alone in the living room. Bethany’s phone suddenly rings.

The screen shows an unknown number.

Brooke hesitates before answering.

BROOKE
Hello?

There is silence on the other end.

BROOKE
Who is this?

A man’s voice finally speaks.

UNKNOWN VOICE
You need to find out what your mother said to Shara before the fight.

Brooke’s face changes.

BROOKE
What do you mean?

The call suddenly ends.

SUSPENSE: WE DON’T KNOW THE WHOLE STORY…

Brooke slowly looks toward the dark hallway. Outside the house, a car is parked in the darkness. Someone is sitting inside, watching the house.
