HOOK — THREE BROKEN LIVES

The first scream shattered the silence of the house.

Sharra and Bethany stood inches apart, their faces twisted with anger, while Larry sat behind them, silently watching the two women destroy whatever remained of his peace.

Neither woman noticed the darkness growing in Larry’s eyes. They were too busy blaming each other.

And neither knew that Larry was about to reveal a secret that could change their lives forever.

SCENE 1 — INT. LARRY’S HOUSE — LATE AFTERNOON

Sharra entered the house with hurried steps. Bethany appeared from the hallway, her eyes filled with anger.

BETHANY

You actually have the nerve to walk into this house as if nothing has happened?

SHARRA

What exactly is that supposed to mean?

BETHANY

You got my mother arrested, Sharra! Do you understand what you’ve done to my family?

SHARRA

Your mother was arrested because of what happened. Don’t blame me for every decision she made.

BETHANY

You hurt people, destroy their lives, and then pretend you’re innocent!

SHARRA

Be careful what you say to me, Bethany.

BETHANY

Or what? You’ll get me arrested too?

Larry watched silently from the couch. He rubbed his forehead, already exhausted by another argument.

SCENE 2 — THE FIGHT OVER BROOKE

BETHANY

And now you’re going after my daughter!

SHARRA

What are you talking about?

BETHANY

Brooke! My daughter is already suffering because of everything that’s happened. She’s trying to rebuild her life, and you’re making everything worse!

SHARRA

I haven’t ruined Brooke’s life. She’s old enough to make her own decisions.

BETHANY

Don’t you dare talk about my daughter!

Bethany shoved Sharra’s shoulder. Sharra stumbled against the table before turning back furiously.

SHARRA

Did you just put your hands on me?

BETHANY

Maybe you need someone to show you that you can’t walk all over everyone!

They began struggling, shouting over each other. A chair scraped across the floor. Larry slowly sat upright, hoping they would stop.

SCENE 3 — LARRY LOSES HIS PATIENCE

BETHANY

You destroyed my family!

SHARRA

Your family was falling apart long before you blamed me!

The argument intensified. Bethany grabbed Sharra’s hair, and Sharra grabbed hers in return.

LARRY

Enough!

Neither woman listened. Larry watched for another second, his jaw tightening.

LARRY

I SAID ENOUGH!

He jumped up from the couch and stormed toward them. His patience had finally run out.

SCENE 4 — THE BREAKING POINT

Larry grabbed Sharra by the hair with one hand and Bethany by the hair with the other, pulling them apart. Both women cried out in surprise.

SHARRA

Larry! What are you doing?

BETHANY

Let go of me!

LARRY

SHUT UP!

The room fell silent. Larry released them, his chest rising and falling with anger.

LARRY

Look at yourselves! Just look at what you’ve become!

LARRY

Every single day, I wake up hoping that maybe today will be different. But no! Every morning, it’s the same shouting, the same accusations, and the same endless drama!

He pointed at both women, his hands trembling.

LARRY

My life has been destroyed because of the two of you! There is no peace in my life anymore. No happiness. I can’t even sit quietly without wondering what disaster is coming next!

Sharra stared at him in shock. Bethany slowly stepped backward. Neither had ever seen Larry so close to breaking.

SCENE 5 — THE AFTERMATH

SHARRA

I didn’t know you felt this way.

LARRY

Of course you didn’t. You were too busy fighting to notice.

BETHANY

Don’t put everything on me! My mother is in jail, and I’m trying to protect Brooke!

LARRY

I know you’re hurting, Bethany. But your pain doesn’t give you permission to destroy everyone else’s life.

BETHANY

You think I enjoy watching my daughter suffer?

LARRY

Then stop making everything worse!

Bethany lowered her head, tears gathering in her eyes. Sharra remained silent.

LARRY

I’m done choosing sides. I’m tired of sacrificing my happiness just to keep this family together.

For once, Larry wasn’t shouting to win an argument. He was telling them the truth.

SCENE 6 — A SECRET IN THE KITCHEN

Larry walked into the kitchen and gripped the counter. Sharra followed him quietly.

SHARRA

Larry, I just want to talk.

LARRY

What is there left to talk about?

SHARRA

I know I lost control. Bethany provoked me.

LARRY

Another excuse. I’m tired of hearing that everything would be fine if someone else behaved differently.

Sharra looked toward the doorway, then lowered her voice.

SHARRA

There are things happening that you don’t understand. Things I can’t explain.

LARRY

What things?

SHARRA

If I tell you the truth, everything could change.

Before Larry could ask another question, Sharra hurried away. He watched her disappear, suspicion replacing his anger.

SCENE 7 — THE UNKNOWN MESSAGE

That night, Bethany sat alone on the couch, repeatedly calling Brooke. Every call went unanswered.

She reread her daughter’s last message: “Please stop making everything worse, Mom. I need some time.”

BETHANY

Oh, Brooke. What have I done?

Her phone suddenly lit up. An unknown number had sent a message.

“If you want to know why your mother was really arrested, ask Sharra what happened that night.”

Bethany’s fingers tightened around the phone. A second message appeared.

“And ask Larry why he has been protecting her.”

LARRY

What’s wrong?

BETHANY

What happened the night my mother was arrested?

Larry’s expression changed. Sharra stood silently in the hallway.

BETHANY

You both know something, don’t you? Someone says you’ve been hiding the truth from me!

LARRY

Don’t jump to conclusions, Bethany.

BETHANY

Then tell me the truth!

Neither Larry nor Sharra answered. Their silence frightened Bethany more than the messages.

SCENE 8 — THE FINAL REVELATION

LARRY

There are things about that night that you don’t know.

BETHANY

Then tell me!

LARRY

Your mother’s arrest wasn’t as simple as you think. Some of the evidence wasn’t what it appeared to be.

BETHANY

What evidence?

Larry glanced at Sharra. She shook her head, silently begging him not to continue.

LARRY

You wanted to keep this secret. You said it was the only way to protect everyone.

SHARRA

Larry, stop!

Before he could answer Bethany, a loud knock struck the front door. All three froze.

WOMAN OUTSIDE

Larry? I know you’re in there. Open the door. We need to talk about Brooke.

BETHANY

Who is that?

Nobody answered. Another knock followed.

WOMAN OUTSIDE

Larry, if you don’t tell Bethany the truth tonight, I will!

Larry turned toward Sharra, his face suddenly pale.

LARRY

You told me she was gone.

Sharra’s lips parted, but no words came out.

BETHANY

Who was supposed to be gone?

Larry slowly reached for the door handle, then stopped. From the other side came one final sentence.

WOMAN OUTSIDE

Bethany, before you believe another word Sharra says, ask her who Brooke’s father really is.

Bethany’s phone slipped from her fingers and hit the floor. Sharra covered her mouth. Larry shut his eyes.

The fight between Bethany and Sharra had never been the real problem. It was only the beginning.
