THE ROOM WAS QUIET…
Too quiet. Sharra had no idea that the conversation she was having with Dree was about to change everything.
The room was quiet. Too quiet.
Sharra sat on the edge of the couch, her hands tightly clasped
together as she stared at the floor.
Across from her, Dree watched her carefully, sensing that something
was seriously wrong.
DREE
“You don’t have to carry all of this by yourself.”
SHARRA
“It’s not that simple, Dree. This is my mom we’re talking about.”
DREE
“I know. But you need help.”
Sharra looked away. For several seconds, she said nothing.
The situation surrounding her mother had become more complicated
than she ever imagined.
SHARRA
“I keep thinking about what happens if nobody helps her.”
DREE
“Then maybe it’s time to stop trying to solve everything alone.”
SHARRA
“You think I should ask Bethany and Larry?”
DREE
“I think you should at least talk to them.”
SHARRA
“Larry is already upset about everything.”
DREE
“Maybe. But that doesn’t mean you can’t ask.”
SHARRA
“I don’t even know what I’m supposed to say.”
DREE
“Just tell them the truth.”
SHARRA
“The truth could make everything worse.”
DREE
“Or it could finally make things clear.”
A long silence filled the room.
Neither of them noticed the footsteps approaching from the hallway.
THEN — THE DOOR OPENED.
Sharra suddenly looked up.
Bethany stood in the doorway.
Larry was right behind her.
BETHANY
“Sharra, we need to talk to you.”
SHARRA
“About my mom?”
BETHANY
“Yes.”
LARRY
“We need to figure out what’s actually going on.”
For a moment, everything seemed normal.
Then Larry looked toward the couch.
He noticed Dree sitting closely beside Sharra.
LARRY
“Why are you here with Sharra?”
DREE
“Larry, calm down. We were just talking.”
LARRY
“Talking about what?”
SHARRA
“Larry, we were talking about my mom.”
Larry’s expression changed.
The calm conversation was quickly turning into something much bigger.
BETHANY
“Larry, let’s just slow down.”
Larry moved toward Dree and forced him toward the doorway.
Sharra immediately stepped between them.
SHARRA
“Larry, what are you doing? Stop!”
DREE
“Let me explain!”
LARRY
“You can explain outside.”
BETHANY
“Larry, let him go!”
DREE
“I came here because Sharra needed somebody to talk to.”
LARRY
“And you thought that somebody had to be you?”
SHARRA
“I didn’t ask him to come here to cause problems.”
LARRY
“Then why was he sitting here like this?”
BETHANY
“Everyone needs to calm down.”
Larry stepped outside with Dree.
Sharra followed them, desperately trying to understand what was happening.
SHARRA
“Larry, please don’t do this.”
LARRY
“Stay inside.”
SHARRA
“No. I need to know what’s happening.”
Sharra’s voice became emotional.
She realized Larry’s anger might not be only about Dree.
DREE
“You’re angry at the wrong person.”
LARRY
“What does that mean?”
DREE
“Ask her what happened before I got here.”
Sharra’s eyes widened.
Bethany immediately noticed her reaction.
BETHANY
“Sharra?”
LARRY
“What is he talking about?”
SHARRA
“Nothing.”
DREE
“It isn’t nothing.”
LARRY
“Then tell me.”
DREE
“I wasn’t the reason Sharra was upset.”
LARRY
“Then what was?”
DREE
“Your wife already knows part of it.”
LARRY
“What does that mean?”
SHARRA
“You knew?”
BETHANY
“I didn’t know everything.”
LARRY
“Then somebody better start talking.”
LARRY
“What happened with your mother?”
SHARRA
“My mom didn’t…”
SHARRA
“She didn’t run because of what everyone thinks.”
LARRY
“What?”
SHARRA
“She left because someone warned her.”
BETHANY
“Who?”
Sharra looked at Dree.
Dree lowered his eyes.
Larry immediately noticed.
LARRY
“You know who it was.”
DREE
“I know who contacted her.”
Larry froze.
Bethany’s eyes widened.
Sharra looked terrified.
LARRY
“Then tell me.”
DREE
“I can…”
Suddenly, a strange sound came from outside.
Everyone turned toward the front door.
