Shadows on the Edge
The Price of Greed
Chapter 1 — A Weekend Turns Dark
The air by the reservoir was thick, heavy with the scent of damp earth and the lingering chill of an approaching autumn. The sun had long dipped below the tree line, casting long, menacing shadows that stretched across the murky water. It was supposed to be a weekend getaway, a chance for the group to unwind away from the suffocating noise of the city. Instead, it had transformed into a pressure cooker of resentment, secrets, and boiling malice.
Bethany stood rigidly by the edge of the water, her arms crossed tightly over her chest. Her face was twisted into an expression of utter disgust, eyes narrowed as she stared down the girl standing a few feet away.
Jade stood trembling, her arms wrapped around herself as if trying to shield her fragile frame from the biting wind. But it wasn’t the weather making her shake; it was the venom dripping from Bethany’s lips.
Chapter 2 — Bethany’s Warning
“I’m warning you, Jade,” Bethany hissed, her voice cutting sharply through the quiet of the evening. “You need to understand where you stand. You’re getting way too comfortable around us. It’s time you dropped this act and left us alone. Go find some other friends in your own league—because let’s be completely honest here, you don’t have the status to walk with us. You never did.”
Jade swallowed hard, her throat tight. She looked up, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and humiliation. “Bethany, I didn’t mean—”
“Save it!” Bethany snapped, stepping closer, her tone dripping with absolute contempt. “Do you think we’re blind? Everyone knows what you are. You’re nothing more than a cheap opportunist. You sell yourself for pocket change, sleeping around with anyone who flashes a bit of cash, crawling into beds just to pay your way through the week. You’re a low-class parasite, Jade. You have no morals, no standards, and definitely no place in our circle.”
Chapter 3 — Jade Has No Answer
The silence that followed was suffocating. Jade stood frozen, the words hitting her like physical blows. She opened her mouth to defend herself, to offer some weak, placating excuse or a comforting reply to soften the blow, but her voice failed her. The sheer terror of the confrontation locked her jaw. She merely stared at the ground, a solitary tear slipping down her cheek, offering no real, satisfying answer to counter Bethany’s vicious assault.
Bethany watched her reaction with disgust, scoffing bitterly. When Jade failed to offer any meaningful defense, Bethany’s anger shifted like a volatile weather pattern, turning its fury toward the two young men standing a short distance away: Purnell and Larry.
Chapter 4 — Purnell and Larry Are Accused
They had been watching the scene unfold from near the camp’s picnic benches, looking visibly uncomfortable. But Bethany wasn’t about to let them off the hook. She spun around, marching toward them, her voice rising to an angry, shrill pitch that shattered the quiet of the woods.
“And as for you two!” Bethany shouted, pointing an accusing finger directly at Purnell and Larry, her voice echoing off the water. “Have you both lost your minds?! Are you completely out of your damn minds?!”
Purnell flinched, holding up his hands defensively. “Whoa, Bethany, calm down. What did we even do?”
“Don’t play stupid with me, Purnell!” Bethany shrieked, her eyes flashing with fury. “Look at what you’re doing! You’re both running around and fawning over this absolute third-class trash! Do you have any idea who she is? She’s a streetwalker! She finds a new ‘friend’ every single day, takes their money, and spreads her legs on a bed before the night is even over! She is a user, a nobody, and you two are acting like besotted fools over her!”
Chapter 5 — Suspicion Takes Hold
Larry rubbed the back of his neck, his face flushing with embarrassment. “Bethany, you’re exaggerating. We were just—”
“Shut up, Larry!” Bethany cut him off fiercely. “You’re defending her? After everything I just said? Have you both gone completely insane? Purnell is already sleeping with her—I know it, everyone knows it! And now I have to watch you, Larry, getting all cozy and trying to set things up with her too?”
The accusation hung heavily in the air. Larry opened his mouth to deny it, but Bethany’s mind was already racing, trapped in a dark, paranoid spiral.
Standing there, watching Purnell’s guilty expression and Larry’s hesitation, a toxic thought took root in Bethany’s brain. Purnell is already hooked on this girl, she thought to herself, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. What if Larry gets entangled with her too? What if this worthless girl manages to manipulate both of them, ruin our group dynamic, and expose everything we’ve built? If Larry hooks up with her, she’ll have a grip on both of them. She’ll control everything.
Chapter 6 — A Dangerous Decision
Panic mixed with a deep, consuming rage. In Bethany’s warped perspective, Jade wasn’t just an annoyance anymore; she was a threat. A loose end that needed to be permanently tied up.
Before Larry gets any closer… before she ruins anything else… I need to end this, Bethany told herself, a cold determination washing over her adrenaline-fueled mind. Right here, right now.
Her eyes darted back toward the water. The reservoir was deep, dark, and secluded. No one else was around for miles.
With her heart hammering against her ribs, Bethany turned away from the two stunned boys and began walking slowly back toward Jade. The darkness of the twilight hid the sinister glint in her eyes.
Jade was still standing near the precipice of the bank, staring blankly at the wet grass, her shoulders slumped in defeat. She didn’t hear the soft, calculated footsteps approaching from behind. She was too wrapped up in her own misery, replaying Bethany’s cruel words in her head.
Chapter 7 — The Push
Bethany crept up behind her like a predator stalking its prey. She glanced back quickly toward Purnell and Larry. They were still arguing, distracted by each other, completely unaware of what was about to happen.
This is it, Bethany thought.
With a sudden, explosive burst of malicious energy, Bethany lunged forward. She slammed both of her hands squarely into Jade’s back with all her might.
“Ah—!”
Jade’s gasp of shock was cut violently short as she lost her footing completely. Her arms flailed wildly in the air, searching for something—anything—to grab onto, but there was only empty space.
Splash!
The impact with the dark, freezing water sounded like a gunshot in the silent evening. Jade plunged beneath the surface, the glacial water swallowing her whole in an instant.
Chapter 8 — The Horrifying Truth
Bethany stood on the edge, breathing heavily, her hands still extended from the push. She stared down at the swirling ripples breaking the surface of the reservoir.
“Bethany! What the hell was that?!”
Purnell’s voice rang out in sheer horror from behind her. Footsteps pounded heavily against the dirt as both Purnell and Larry sprinted toward the water’s edge, their faces pale with absolute disbelief.
“Did you just… did you just push her?!” Larry screamed, skidding to a halt beside Bethany, staring at the churning water where Jade had vanished.
Chapter 9 — No Remorse
Bethany didn’t flinch. She kept her eyes locked on the dark water, a chilling, dead calm settling over her features. She turned slowly to face the two horrified young men, her expression devoid of any remorse.
“She had it coming,” Bethany said, her voice eerily quiet. “She was a disease. And now… our problems are finally solved.”
Purnell stared at her as if she were a complete stranger, his mouth opening and closing in mute horror, while the dark, silent water closed completely over the spot where Jade had fallen, leaving nothing behind but widening ripples in the fading light.
