A CINEMATIC DRAMA SCREENPLAY

FADE IN: — EXT. TROPICAL RESORT – POOLSIDE – LATE AFTERNOON

The sun begins to disappear behind the palm trees.

Warm golden light spreads across the luxury resort. Music plays softly in the distance. Guests laugh near the pool.

But away from the crowd, the mood is completely different.

SHAYLA sits alone on a bench beneath a large palm tree. Her head is lowered. Tears roll silently down her cheeks.

She quickly wipes them away, hoping nobody notices.

But someone does.

WAYNE.

He is walking back toward the resort when he notices Shayla sitting alone. He slows down.

His expression changes. He can immediately tell something is wrong.

WAYNE
Shayla?

Shayla doesn’t respond. She keeps her face turned away.

WAYNE
Hey… What’s going on? Why are you crying?
SHAYLA
I’m okay.
WAYNE
No, you’re not. I can see it on your face.
SHAYLA
I just… I don’t know. Everything feels like too much right now.

Wayne sits beside her, leaving some space between them. His voice becomes softer.

WAYNE
You don’t have to explain everything. But you shouldn’t sit here hurting by yourself.
SHAYLA
I feel like nobody understands me.
WAYNE
I understand that feeling. Sometimes you can be surrounded by people and still feel completely alone.
SHAYLA
Why are you being so nice to me?
WAYNE
Because you’re hurting. That’s enough reason.

Shayla looks away. Her eyes fill with tears again.

SHAYLA
I didn’t want anybody to see me like this.
WAYNE
There’s nothing embarrassing about crying. Everybody breaks down sometimes.
SHAYLA
Thank you.
WAYNE
You’re going to be okay. Just take a breath.
EXT. RESORT WALKWAY – CONTINUOUS

But neither of them notices someone watching from across the resort.

YAYA.

She has just stepped outside.

Her eyes immediately land on Wayne and Shayla.

She stops.

Her expression changes.

She sees Wayne sitting beside Shayla. She sees Shayla crying. She sees Wayne comforting her.

Yaya’s jealousy begins to rise.

YAYA
What is this?

She starts walking toward them. Her steps become faster.

EXT. POOLSIDE – CONTINUOUS

Wayne finally notices Yaya.

WAYNE
Yaya…

Yaya doesn’t answer. She walks directly toward Shayla.

YAYA
What are you doing with Wayne?
SHAYLA
Nothing. I was just upset.
WAYNE
Yaya, calm down. She’s been crying. I was only trying to help her.
YAYA
Then why does it always have to be you?
WAYNE
Because I saw her crying. What was I supposed to do? Just walk away?
YAYA
You could have called me.
WAYNE
This wasn’t about you or me. It was about somebody who was hurting.
SHAYLA
Wayne, it’s okay. I don’t want this to become an argument.
YAYA
You always say that.
SHAYLA
I wasn’t trying to cause anything.
YAYA
But you’re always around him.
WAYNE
That’s enough. Don’t blame her for something that isn’t happening.
EXT. POOLSIDE – MOMENTS LATER

Yaya’s emotions take over.

YAYA
You don’t understand how this looks to me.
WAYNE
Then talk to me. Don’t take it out on her.
SHAYLA
I really should leave.

Shayla turns to walk away.

But Yaya reaches out and pushes Shayla away from Wayne.

Shayla stumbles backward.

WAYNE
Yaya! Stop!
SHAYLA
Why did you do that?

Yaya, overwhelmed by anger, lashes out and hits Shayla.

The moment passes almost instantly.

Silence.

Wayne freezes.

Shayla touches her face, stunned.

WAYNE
Yaya… What did you just do?
YAYA
I… I didn’t mean—
WAYNE
Are you okay?
SHAYLA
I’m fine.
WAYNE
You had no right to put your hands on her.
YAYA
I was angry.
WAYNE
Being angry doesn’t make it okay.
EXT. RESORT WALKWAY – MOMENTS LATER

Yaya’s anger has turned into regret.

YAYA
I was scared.
WAYNE
Scared of what?
YAYA
Of losing you.
WAYNE
Yaya, caring about somebody who’s hurting doesn’t mean I have feelings for them.
YAYA
I know that now. But in that moment… I wasn’t thinking.
WAYNE
You can’t hurt somebody because you’re jealous.
YAYA
You’re right. I shouldn’t have pushed her. And I shouldn’t have hit her.
WAYNE
Then apologize to her. Not because I told you to. Because she deserves one.
YAYA
I will.
INT. RESORT LOUNGE – EVENING

Shayla sits alone on a sofa. She looks exhausted.

The door opens.

Yaya slowly walks inside.

YAYA
Shayla… I’m sorry.
YAYA
I had no right to push you. And I definitely had no right to hit you. I let my jealousy control me.
SHAYLA
I understand that you were upset. But you really hurt me.
YAYA
I know. And I’m sorry.
SHAYLA
I wasn’t trying to take Wayne away from you.
YAYA
I know.
SHAYLA
He was just helping me.
YAYA
I know that now.
YAYA
I hope one day you can forgive me.
SHAYLA
Maybe.
