BETHANY, BROOKE, AND ISAIAH: A MOTHER’S REFUSAL SPARKS A SHOCKING FAMILY CONFRONTATION

A SHOCKING FAMILY CONFRONTATION!

Brooke only wanted to help someone in need, but when she turned to her own mother for financial support, she received something she never expected — a slap across the face that turned a simple request for money into an explosive mother-daughter battle.

SCENE 1: ISAIAH’S UNEXPECTED PHONE CALL

The day begins quietly, but Brooke has no idea that a single phone call is about to put her in the middle of another family conflict.

Brooke is going about her daily activities when her phone suddenly rings. She looks at the screen and sees Isaiah’s name. She hesitates for a moment before answering, wondering what he could possibly want.

BROOKE
Hello, Isaiah. What’s going on? Is everything okay?
ISAIAH
Hey, Brooke. I actually wanted to talk to you about something important. I’m dealing with a financial situation right now, and I was hoping you might be able to help me out.

Brooke’s expression changes. She wasn’t expecting Isaiah to bring up money.

BROOKE
Financial situation? What happened? Is something wrong?
ISAIAH
I’ve got a few things I need to take care of, but I’m short on money at the moment. I wouldn’t be asking if I had another option. I just need a little help to get through this situation.

Brooke listens carefully. She can hear the seriousness in Isaiah’s voice, and she understands that he wouldn’t make such a request without a reason.

BROOKE
I understand, Isaiah. But honestly, I don’t have that much money available right now. Let me see what I can do.
ISAIAH
I would really appreciate it. Even if you can only help with part of what I need, it would make a difference.
BROOKE
Okay. Let me figure something out, and I’ll get back to you.
ISAIAH
Thank you, Brooke. I really appreciate you listening.

The call ends. Brooke puts her phone down and takes a deep breath. She wants to help Isaiah, but she knows that finding the money won’t be easy.

She starts thinking about the one person who might be able to help her.

Her mother, Bethany.

Brooke knows Bethany has money, but she also knows that asking her mother for financial assistance can quickly turn into an argument.

Still, Brooke decides to give it a try.

SCENE 2: BROOKE TURNS TO HER MOTHER

Brooke approaches Bethany, who is busy with her own activities. Bethany looks up as her daughter comes closer.

BETHANY
What is it, Brooke? Why are you looking at me like that?
BROOKE
Mom, I need to ask you for a favor.
BETHANY
A favor? What kind of favor?
BROOKE
Isaiah just called me. He’s going through some financial difficulties, and he needs some money. I was wondering if you could help me out so I can help him.

Bethany immediately raises her eyebrows. She wasn’t expecting this request, and her expression suggests that she already knows where the conversation is heading.

BETHANY
Wait a minute. You’re coming to me because Isaiah needs money?
BROOKE
Yes, Mom. He needs some financial help right now. I just want to help him out because he’s having a difficult time.
BETHANY
And why exactly should that become my responsibility?

Brooke looks surprised by her mother’s response.

BROOKE
I’m not saying it’s your responsibility. I’m simply asking if you can help. You have the money, and I thought you might be willing to do something for me.
BETHANY
Brooke, every time you come to me, there’s always something. Somebody needs money, somebody needs help, or you’ve suddenly found another reason why I should give you something.
BROOKE
Mom, that’s not fair. I’m not asking you for money because I want to go shopping or buy something unnecessary. I’m asking because someone needs help.
BETHANY
And I’m supposed to believe that every time?

Bethany shakes her head and looks away. Brooke realizes that convincing her mother isn’t going to be easy. But she isn’t ready to give up.

SCENE 3: BETHANY REFUSES TO HELP

Bethany continues questioning Brooke about the situation. Instead of showing concern about Isaiah’s financial problems, she focuses entirely on why Brooke should not be asking her for money.

BETHANY
Let me tell you something. I work hard for my money. I don’t just have money sitting around waiting for you to come and ask for it whenever you feel like helping somebody.
BROOKE
Mom, I know you work hard. I’m not ignoring that. But you’re my mother, and I thought I could come to you when I needed help.
BETHANY
Being your mother doesn’t mean I have to pay for every decision you make.
BROOKE
I’m not asking you to pay for every decision I make!

Brooke’s voice becomes louder.

BROOKE
I’m asking you for help with one situation. Why are you making it seem like I’m constantly taking advantage of you?
BETHANY
Because that’s exactly what it feels like!

Bethany points toward Brooke.

BETHANY
You need to learn how to manage money. You spend money on things you don’t need, and then when something important comes up, you expect somebody else to rescue you.

Brooke looks hurt.

BROOKE
You don’t even know what I’ve been dealing with. You just assume that everything I do is wrong.
BETHANY
I know enough. I’ve watched you make unnecessary expenses, and I’m tired of hearing excuses.
BROOKE
This has nothing to do with unnecessary spending. Isaiah needs help, and I’m trying to find a way to help him.
BETHANY
Then find your own money!

The words hit Brooke hard. She never expected her mother to respond with so much anger over a simple request.

BROOKE
So you’re really not going to help me?
BETHANY
No, Brooke. I’m not giving you anything.

A painful silence fills the room. Brooke stares at her mother, hoping Bethany might reconsider. But Bethany remains firm.

SCENE 4: THE ARGUMENT TAKES A DANGEROUS TURN

Brooke tries one more time to explain why she came to her mother.

BROOKE
Mom, please. I’m not asking you to give me a huge amount of money. I just need something that can help Isaiah get through whatever he’s dealing with.
BETHANY
And what happens after that? Tomorrow, somebody else will need money, and you’ll come running back to me again.
BROOKE
Why can’t you just listen to me for once?
BETHANY
Because I’m tired of listening to the same excuses!

Bethany becomes increasingly frustrated. She begins talking about how much money she has already spent helping Brooke and how she refuses to continue supporting what she considers irresponsible behavior.

BETHANY
You need to understand that I have my own expenses. I have responsibilities. I cannot keep giving away my money because you decide somebody else needs financial assistance.
BROOKE
You act like I’m asking you for everything you own!
BETHANY
That’s not the point!
BROOKE
Then what is the point, Mom? You have the ability to help, but you don’t even want to consider it.
BETHANY
Because I don’t have extra money for your demands!

Brooke shakes her head in disbelief.

BROOKE
You know what? Sometimes I feel like I can’t ask you for anything without being insulted.
BETHANY
Maybe that’s because you need to hear the truth.
BROOKE
No, Mom. You’re not telling me the truth. You’re just making me feel like I’m a burden.
BETHANY
If you don’t want to feel that way, stop expecting me to solve your problems.

The tension becomes almost unbearable. Both women are now speaking over each other. Neither is willing to back down.

SCENE 5: THE MONEY BECOMES THE CENTER OF THE FIGHT

Bethany has money in her hand, and Brooke notices it. She looks at the money and then back at her mother.

BROOKE
If you really don’t want to give me anything, just say that. But don’t stand there and pretend you can’t afford to help.
BETHANY
I already told you that I’m not giving you anything!
BROOKE
Then why are you making such a big deal out of it?
BETHANY
Because you never understand when somebody tells you no!

Brooke becomes increasingly frustrated. She feels that Bethany is deliberately humiliating her instead of simply explaining her decision.

BROOKE
I’m your daughter, Mom. I shouldn’t have to beg you like this!
BETHANY
And I’m your mother, not your personal bank account!

Brooke reaches toward the money in Bethany’s hand.

BROOKE
Just give me some of it. I’ll make sure Isaiah gets the help he needs.
BETHANY
Don’t touch my money!
BROOKE
I’m only trying to get you to understand!
BETHANY
I don’t care what you’re trying to do. I said no!

Brooke reaches for the money again. This time, Bethany refuses to release it. Both women hold on, and the situation quickly becomes physical.

BROOKE
Mom, let go!
BETHANY
You let go! You’re not taking anything from me!
BROOKE
Why are you acting like I’m stealing from you? I’m asking for help!
BETHANY
Because you don’t know how to respect boundaries!

The struggle over the money continues for a few moments. Brooke pulls in one direction while Bethany holds firmly onto it. Their voices grow louder. The disagreement has now crossed a line that neither woman seems able to control.

SCENE 6: BETHANY SLAPS HER OWN DAUGHTER

Suddenly, Bethany loses her temper. In a shocking moment, she raises her hand and delivers a hard slap across Brooke’s face.

SMACK!

Brooke immediately stops moving. Her head turns to the side, and she slowly brings her hand to her cheek.

For a moment, there is complete silence. She looks at Bethany with disbelief. She cannot believe her own mother has just slapped her over a disagreement about money.

BROOKE
Did you seriously just slap me?

Bethany stands there, breathing heavily.

BETHANY
Maybe now you’ll understand that you cannot put your hands on me and take whatever you want!
BROOKE
I’m your daughter! How could you do that to me?

Brooke’s eyes begin to fill with tears. She takes a step backward, trying to process what just happened.

BROOKE
I came to you because I needed help. I didn’t come here to fight with you!
BETHANY
And I told you that I wasn’t giving you anything!
BROOKE
You could have just said no! You didn’t have to hit me!

Bethany tries to defend herself.

BETHANY
You were grabbing my money! What did you expect me to do?
BROOKE
I expected you to act like my mother!

Her words leave Bethany momentarily speechless. Brooke looks away, wiping her tears. The pain on her face is no longer just about the slap. It’s about the fact that the person she expected to support her has become the person hurting her.

SCENE 7: BROOKE REFUSES TO BACK DOWN

The confrontation is far from over. Brooke turns back toward Bethany, and this time her voice carries a mixture of anger and disappointment.

BROOKE
You know what hurts the most? It’s not even that you refused to give me money. It’s the way you treated me.
BETHANY
Brooke, don’t start acting like you’re the victim here.
BROOKE
I am your daughter! I came to you bec
