Brooke and Sharra:
The Day Bethany Lost Control

A Family Conflict Full of Anger, Secrets and Unexpected Consequences

Sometimes, the Person in Control Loses Everything

Sometimes, the person who has been controlling everyone else is the one who finally gets thrown out. But when Brooke turns against Bethany, the real question is whether this is the end of their war—or the beginning of something even worse.

SCENE 1 — THE HOUSE WHERE NOTHING FEELS RIGHT

The house was unusually quiet that morning.

Bethany stood in the living room, watching Brooke prepare to leave. Her expression tightened as she noticed Brooke reaching for her handbag.

BETHANY

Where do you think you’re going?

BROOKE

Out.

BETHANY

Out where? You can’t just walk out of this house whenever you feel like it.

Brooke stopped and slowly turned around.

She had heard those words too many times. Every decision she made seemed to become another argument, and every attempt to enjoy her life ended with Bethany questioning her choices.

BROOKE

I’m not asking you for permission. I’m telling you I’m leaving.

BETHANY

Don’t start with that attitude again. You always behave like nobody can tell you what to do.

BROOKE

Because you never stop trying!

Brooke’s voice echoed through the room. Bethany folded her arms, refusing to back down.

BETHANY

Someone has to keep you under control. Look at the way you behave. Sometimes I honestly think there’s something wrong with you.

BROOKE

Did you seriously just call me crazy again?

BETHANY

If you keep acting like this, what else am I supposed to call you?

Brooke’s eyes filled with anger, but she refused to let Bethany see how deeply the words affected her.

BROOKE

One day, you’re going to regret treating me like this.

BETHANY

Is that supposed to scare me? You threaten to throw me out every other day. We both know you don’t have the courage to do it.

Bethany turned away, convinced she had won another argument.

But Brooke remained standing in the middle of the room. For the first time, she wasn’t thinking about what to say next.

She was thinking about what to do.

SCENE 2 — A DAUGHTER’S PAIN

Later that afternoon, Brooke called her biological mother, Sharra. The moment Sharra answered, Brooke released a frustrated sigh.

SHARRA

Brooke? What’s happened now?

BROOKE

It’s Bethany. Who else would it be?

Sharra listened as Brooke described the latest argument, explaining how Bethany questioned her movements, criticized her choices, and treated her as if she were incapable of making decisions.

BROOKE

Mom, I can’t take this anymore. Every single thing I do becomes a problem. If I go somewhere, she questions me. If I stay home, she finds something else to complain about.

SHARRA

And what did she say to you this time?

BROOKE

She called me crazy. Again! She thinks she can insult me whenever she wants and then expect me to stay quiet.

Sharra’s expression grew serious. She knew Brooke had been struggling with Bethany’s behavior for a long time. What worried her most was that every new disagreement seemed to leave Brooke angrier than before.

SHARRA

Listen to me carefully. You cannot spend your entire life letting another person make every decision for you.

BROOKE

That’s exactly what I’ve been telling you! But whenever I stand up for myself, she acts like I’m the problem.

SHARRA

Then stop giving her control over your choices. If you want to do something reasonable, make your decision and stand by it. You don’t need to argue with her about every little thing.

Brooke fell silent. For once, someone was listening without immediately criticizing her.

BROOKE

But what if she starts another fight? You know how she gets.

SHARRA

Then stay calm and don’t let the argument control you. And if things become difficult, call me. We’ll figure out what to do next.

BROOKE

You really think I should stop listening to her?

SHARRA

I think you should stop allowing her to decide who you’re allowed to be.

Brooke wiped away the frustration on her face.

BROOKE

I wish you were here, Mom.

SHARRA

I know, sweetheart. But remember something: standing up for yourself doesn’t mean you have to become the person you’re fighting against.

Brooke absorbed those words, although her anger still burned beneath the surface.

She had received the encouragement she wanted. What she did with it, however, would soon change everything.

SCENE 3 — BETHANY MAKES ANOTHER MISTAKE

That evening, Brooke returned to the living room and found Bethany talking to Larry. The moment Bethany noticed her, the conversation stopped.

Brooke immediately sensed that she had been the subject of their discussion.

BROOKE

Why did you both go quiet when I walked in?

BETHANY

Because not every conversation in this house concerns you.

BROOKE

Then why do I always feel like you’re discussing my life behind my back?

Larry stepped between their growing tempers with an exhausted expression.

LARRY

Can we please have one peaceful evening without another argument?

BETHANY

Tell her that! I’m tired of dealing with her behavior.

BROOKE

And I’m tired of dealing with yours.

BETHANY

You see? That’s exactly what I’m talking about. She has no respect for anyone.

Brooke looked toward Larry, waiting for him to say something in her defense. But he hesitated.

That hesitation hurt more than Brooke expected.

BROOKE

Dad, are you going to let her speak to me like that?

LARRY

Brooke, you both need to calm down.

BROOKE

That’s always your answer. You tell me to calm down, but you never tell her to stop.

LARRY

I’m not taking sides. I just want this fighting to end.

BROOKE

Then maybe you should ask yourself why it never ends.

BETHANY

Oh, here we go again. Everything is always somebody else’s fault.

BROOKE

You don’t get to insult me every day and then act surprised when I finally answer back.

BETHANY

This is my house too, and I won’t let you turn it into a place where you can do whatever you want.

BROOKE

Your house? You talk as if you own everyone who lives here.

Larry immediately recognized the danger in the conversation.

LARRY

Enough! Both of you, stop!

For a few seconds, nobody spoke. Then Bethany made the mistake that pushed Brooke even closer to her breaking point.

BETHANY

Perhaps if your mother had raised you properly, we wouldn’t be having these problems.

BROOKE

Don’t bring my mother into this.

BETHANY

Why not? You seem to think she’s the only person who understands you.

BROOKE

At least she listens to me!

BETHANY

Then why don’t you go running to her again?

Brooke said nothing. She simply turned around and walked away.

But this time, Bethany’s words had reopened a wound that had never properly healed.

Because Brooke had not forgotten what Bethany had done to Sharra. Not for a single day.

SCENE 4 — THE ARREST BROOKE NEVER FORGOT

That night, Brooke sat alone in her bedroom. Her thoughts returned to the incident that had permanently changed her feelings toward Bethany.

Sharra had been arrested after the police were called, and Brooke believed Bethany was responsible for bringing that humiliation into her mother’s life.

Whatever disagreements existed between the adults, Brooke could not understand why the situation had been allowed to reach that point.

To Brooke, it wasn’t simply another family argument. It was personal.

She remembered the helplessness she had felt when she learned that her own mother was in trouble. And she remembered Bethany’s presence in the middle of the conflict.

BROOKE

(whispering to herself)

You could have handled things differently. You didn’t have to take it that far.

Her phone lit up. Sharra was calling again. Brooke answered immediately.

SHARRA

Are you all right?

BROOKE

No, Mom. I’m really not.

SHARRA

What happened?

BROOKE

She started talking about you again. She keeps acting like she has the right to judge everyone, but she never thinks about what she’s done herself.

Sharra took a slow breath.

SHARRA

Brooke, I know you’re angry about what happened to me. I understand that. But don’t allow your anger to push you into doing something you’ll regret.

BROOKE

How am I supposed to forgive her when she hasn’t even stopped treating me this way?

SHARRA

You don’t have to pretend everything is fine. But you need to think clearly, especially when you’re upset.

Brooke looked toward her bedroom door. She could hear Bethany moving around downstairs.

BROOKE

I just want her to stop controlling my life.

SHARRA

Then make your boundaries clear. You have every right to speak up when someone treats you unfairly.

BROOKE

And if she refuses to listen?

SHARRA

Then you’ll have to decide what you’re willing to accept. But remember, Brooke, there is a difference between protecting your peace and letting anger make your decisions.

Brooke nodded, even though her mother couldn’t see her.

BROOKE

I understand.

But the truth was that Brooke was still struggling to separate the pain of the past from the anger of the present.

And Bethany was about to discover just how much resentment had been building inside her.

SCENE 5 — THE FINAL CONFRONTATION

The following morning, Bethany found Brooke preparing to leave again. She immediately positioned herself near the front door.

BETHANY

Where are you going this time?

BROOKE

I’m going out. I’ve already told you that you don’t need to question everything I do.

BETHANY

As long as you’re living here, I have every right to know what’s happening.

BROOKE

You can ask me a question without treating me like I’m a prisoner!

BETHANY

Don’t exaggerate. Nobody is holding you prisoner.

BROOKE

Then stop acting like I need your permission to breathe!

Bethany’s patience finally disappeared.

BETHANY

I’ve had enough of your disrespect. If you can’t follow the rules, perhaps you shouldn’t be living here at all.

Brooke slowly lowered her handbag. The words hung between them.

BROOKE

Did you just tell me that I shouldn’t be living here?

BETHANY

I said what I said. I’m tired of your attitude, your complaints, and your constant threats.

Brooke stared at her. Then she took a deep breath.

BROOKE

Fine.
