PURNAL, LARRY, AND BETHANY:
A BROTHERLY WAR BEGINS!
ONE QUESTION ABOUT BETHANY TURNS TWO BROTHERS INTO ENEMIES!
SCENE 1 — THE CONFRONTATION
The afternoon is unusually tense. Larry stands in the living room, looking at his phone when Purnal walks in with a serious expression. Purnal has held back his frustration for a long time, but today he has decided to speak up.
PURNAL
Larry, we need to talk. Before you start making excuses, I want you to listen carefully.
LARRY
What is it this time, Purnal? If you came here to give me another lecture, save your breath.
PURNAL
Why haven’t you divorced Bethany yet? It’s been long enough, Larry. Every time I ask, you give me another excuse. When are you finally going to make a decision?
LARRY
Bethany is my wife, not yours. If I decide to divorce her, I’ll do it when I’m ready. You don’t get to set a deadline for me.
PURNAL
I’m asking you to stop pretending everything will fix itself. You know this marriage isn’t working. Why are you still holding on?
Larry steps closer, his expression hardening.
LARRY
Be careful how you speak to me.
PURNAL
Or what, Larry? You’re going to keep avoiding the question?
The atmosphere changes instantly. What began as a conversation between brothers is turning into a battle neither wants to lose.
SCENE 2 — LARRY REFUSES TO BACK DOWN
LARRY
I don’t need you to tell me how to handle my wife. I have my own reasons for doing things my way.
PURNAL
Then explain them! If you don’t want to be with Bethany, end the marriage. If you still want her, stop acting like you’re already done. What exactly do you want?
LARRY
That’s none of your business!
PURNAL
It became my business when I started watching you destroy your own peace over the same situation again and again.
Larry turns the argument toward Purnal’s own life, questioning his right to offer advice.
LARRY
Maybe you should spend more time fixing your own life instead of pretending to be the wise brother.
PURNAL
Being your brother gives me a reason to care about you. But maybe that’s my mistake. Maybe I should have stopped caring a long time ago.
LARRY
Then maybe you should have.
The words hurt Purnal deeply. He looks at Larry with disappointment.
PURNAL
After everything we’ve been through, you’re telling me to stop caring about you?
LARRY
I’m telling you to stay out of my marriage.
PURNAL
Fine. But don’t come looking for me when your decisions finally catch up with you.
SCENE 3 — PURNAL’S FAMILY BECOMES THE TARGET
Purnal moves toward the door, but Larry’s next words stop him.
LARRY
Why are you so concerned about my divorce when you can’t even keep your own family together? Your wife and child are in Las Vegas, and you’re here worrying about Bethany and me!
PURNAL
Don’t bring my family into this.
LARRY
You brought my wife into it. Why should your situation be off-limits?
Purnal’s expression changes. Larry has touched a deeply personal part of his life.
PURNAL
You think I don’t know they’re in Las Vegas? You think I don’t feel their absence every day? You have no idea what I’ve been dealing with or what I’ve done to keep my family together.
LARRY
Then why are they living in another city while you’re here?
PURNAL
Because life doesn’t always work out the way you want it to. Sometimes people need distance. You should understand that better than anyone.
LARRY
Don’t compare your marriage to mine.
PURNAL
I’m telling you to be careful before judging somebody else’s situation!
The original question about Bethany has become a battle over pride, family, and painful personal failures.
SCENE 4 — THE ARGUMENT EXPLODES
PURNAL
I’m done, Larry. I came here hoping you’d finally be honest with yourself. Instead, you’ve turned this into an attack on my family.
LARRY
Then stop coming here and acting like you know what’s best for me.
PURNAL
It hurts that you’d rather insult your own brother than admit you might be making a mistake.
LARRY
And it hurts having a brother who thinks he can control my life!
PURNAL
I have never tried to control you!
LARRY
Then stop telling me what to do!
The final words push the confrontation beyond reason. Larry suddenly strikes Purnal. Purnal stumbles backward, stunned by what his brother has done.
PURNAL
You just hit me?
LARRY
You should have watched your mouth.
PURNAL
I came here as your brother!
Purnal retaliates, and the argument erupts into a physical fight. They struggle across the living room, knocking into furniture as years of frustration spill into the moment.
LARRY
You should have stayed out of my business!
PURNAL
And you should have learned how to listen!
They finally separate, both shaken by how far things have gone.
PURNAL
This isn’t an answer, Larry. This is what happens when you refuse to deal with your problems like a grown man.
For the first time, Larry hesitates. He realizes this is no longer an argument that can simply be forgotten.
SCENE 5 — TWO BROTHERS, ONE BROKEN BOND
The living room falls silent. Purnal straightens his clothes while Larry tries to steady his breathing.
PURNAL
Look at us, Larry. We started this conversation because I asked you about Bethany, and now we’ve ended up fighting each other.
LARRY
You pushed me too far.
PURNAL
No. I said things you didn’t like. There’s a difference.
PURNAL
Do you think I wanted to talk about my wife and child? That situation already hurts me enough.
Larry looks away. For a brief moment, he appears to understand the damage his words have caused.
PURNAL
Maybe I should leave you alone and let you make whatever decision you want. But don’t mistake my silence for agreement.
LARRY
That’s what I’ve been telling you from the beginning.
PURNAL
I’m going to Las Vegas soon. I need to figure out what’s happening with my own family.
LARRY
Then go to Las Vegas.
PURNAL
Remember this, Larry. Bethany isn’t the only person who can walk away from your life. One day, you might realize that the people who cared about you have finally stopped trying.
Purnal leaves. Larry stands alone, staring at the closed door. For the first time since the confrontation began, he has nobody to argue with.
SCENE 6 — THE QUESTION LARRY CANNOT ESCAPE
Several minutes pass. Larry picks up his phone, but he cannot concentrate. Purnal’s final words keep replaying in his mind.
His phone rings. Bethany’s name appears on the screen.
LARRY
What do you want, Bethany?
BETHANY
I need to ask you something. Did Purnal come to see you today?
LARRY
Why are you asking me about Purnal?
BETHANY
Because I heard something, and I need to know whether it’s true.
LARRY
Yes, he came here, and we talked. That’s all you need to know.
BETHANY
Purnal contacted me before he came to see you. He asked questions about our marriage and wanted to know what I planned to do next.
LARRY
Why would he contact you behind my back?
BETHANY
Before you decide what to do about me, find out why your own brother is so determined to see this marriage end.
Larry freezes. The call ends before he can demand an explanation.
WHY WAS PURNAL TALKING TO BETHANY BEFORE CONFRONTING LARRY?
Later that evening, Purnal sits alone in his car. An unknown number sends him a message.
UNKNOWN MESSAGE
Did you tell Larry the truth about Bethany?
Purnal starts typing a reply, then deletes it. Another message arrives.
UNKNOWN MESSAGE
You cannot keep this from him forever. If Larry discovers it from someone else, both of you will lose more than you realize.
Purnal’s wife calls him.
PURNAL’S WIFE
Did you speak to Larry? Did you tell him why you want him to divorce Bethany?
PURNAL
No. We argued, and things became physical. He thinks I’m trying to control his life.
PURNAL’S WIFE
Maybe you should have told him before things reached this point.
PURNAL
It’s not just about him and Bethany anymore. There’s something about this marriage that Larry doesn’t know.
Meanwhile, Larry receives a message from an unknown number.
UNKNOWN MESSAGE
If you want to know why Purnal is pushing you to divorce Bethany, ask him what happened before your marriage started falling apart.
LARRY
What happened before my marriage started falling apart?
Larry calls Purnal twice, but neither call is answered. Then another message appears.
UNKNOWN MESSAGE
Don’t ask Bethany. Ask your brother what he promised to keep secret.
Larry lowers his phone. He is no longer willing to wait for Purnal to explain himself.
LARRY
You wanted me to make a decision about Bethany. Fine. But first, I’m going to find out what you’ve been hiding from me.
Larry grabs his keys and heads for the door. Just as he steps outside, Bethany calls again.
BETHANY
Larry, don’t go looking for Purnal. Don’t confront him again until you know the whole story.
LARRY
Why? What are you afraid I’ll find out?
BETHANY
Because the truth about Purnal, you, and me is not what you think it is.
The call ends. Larry stands motionless, his hand wrapped around his car keys.
SCENE 7 — A SECRET WAITING IN LAS VEGAS
Somewhere on the road to Las Vegas, Purnal’s phone lights up again. Larry is calling, but Purnal lets the phone ring without answering.
He opens a photograph saved on his phone. His expression changes as he studies it, and he quickly puts the phone away when another vehicle approaches.
Back at home, Larry realizes that the fight with his brother may have been only the beginning of something much bigger. A marriage is hanging in the balance, and an unknown secret threatens to destroy what remains of their family.
WHAT DID PURNAL PROMISE TO KEEP SECRET?
Will Larry turn against Bethany? Will he forgive his brother? Or will the truth destroy both relationships forever?
The answers remain hidden, and Purnal may be the only person who knows the whole story.
