jnd ) WAYNE WAS NEVER AFTER AMBER — HE WAS AFTER DEV’S DARKEST SECRET

The Suspicious Interest
Wayne had no reason to keep looking for Amber. No reason to keep texting her. No reason to appear whenever she was alone. But somehow, he was always there. And tonight, Amber was about to discover that his attention might not be about attraction at all.
1. The Feeling That Wouldn’t Go Away
The living room was unusually quiet. Evening light slipped through the curtains, leaving long shadows across the floor.
Amber sat on the couch, staring at her phone without really seeing the screen. She had been trying to convince herself that she was imagining things.
Across the room, Dev watched her carefully. He knew the difference between Amber being tired and Amber carrying something she didn’t know how to say.
DEV
Something’s been bothering you.
AMBER
It’s Wayne.
DEV
What about him?
AMBER
I don’t know. The way he keeps finding reasons to talk to me… it feels like more than just being friendly.
Dev’s expression changed.
Amber explained how Wayne seemed to notice every little detail about her routine. A casual question here. An unexpected appearance there.
Nothing was obvious enough to accuse him of anything. Yet together, the moments were becoming impossible to ignore.
2. A Message After Dark
Later that night, Wayne stood alone outside, his face illuminated by the cold glow of his phone.
He opened Amber’s contact and stared at the blank message box.
WAYNE
You ever feel like some people are exactly where they’re supposed to be…
He stared at the sentence for several seconds. Then deleted it.
He needed something safer. Something that wouldn’t reveal too much.
WAYNE
Hope you’re having a good night.
He pressed send.
The message looked innocent. Almost harmless.
But Wayne wasn’t smiling because he had simply wished Amber a good night.
He was smiling because he knew she would wonder why he had sent it.
3. The Question Dev Couldn’t Ignore
Amber read the message in the kitchen. The house was quiet except for the faint hum of an appliance.
She read it once. Then again.
There was nothing threatening in the words. Nothing she could point to and call proof. Still, something about the timing made her uncomfortable.
DEV
Is that him again?
AMBER
Yeah.
DEV
Amber, you already have a life with me. You don’t owe Wayne anything.
AMBER
I know. That’s why I’m trying to understand what he actually wants.
Dev stepped closer.
Amber knew she could ignore Wayne or block him. But one question kept bothering her.
Why was he so interested in her when she had never encouraged that kind of attention?
Then another thought crossed her mind.
What if Wayne wasn’t trying to get closer to her at all? What if Amber was only part of something much bigger?
4. The Parking Lot Encounter
The following day, Amber walked toward her car. Her keys were already in her hand.
She was halfway across the parking lot when she heard her name.
WAYNE
Amber, wait.
AMBER
What is it?
WAYNE
I just wanted to see you.
AMBER
Why?
WAYNE
Maybe I don’t need a reason.
AMBER
I think you do.
Wayne’s faint smile disappeared for a moment. Amber noticed.
She turned toward her car.
WAYNE
You should ask Dev what he remembers.
Amber slowly turned around.
Before she could ask what he meant, Wayne walked away.
Amber stood there, frozen.
What exactly did Dev have to remember?
5. A Secret From the Past
That night, Amber told Dev everything. The strange message. The parking lot. And especially Wayne’s final words.
AMBER
Something about this doesn’t feel right.
DEV
Then trust that feeling.
AMBER
But what if I’m wrong?
DEV
Then we find out the truth.
Dev became quiet.
AMBER
What aren’t you telling me?
Dev looked toward the window.
DEV
There is something about Wayne you don’t know.
AMBER
What?
Before Dev could answer, his phone rang.
He looked at the screen. His face suddenly changed.
The caller ID was hidden.
Dev rejected the call.
Seconds later, a message appeared.
AMBER
Dev… who was that?
6. Wayne’s Real Game
Across town, Wayne sat inside his car with the engine off. His phone rested in his hand.
The same message thread with Amber remained open.
But Wayne wasn’t looking at Amber’s unanswered message anymore.
He was looking at a photograph.
The picture showed Amber and Dev together.
Wayne zoomed in on Dev’s face.
Then he opened another photograph.
This one was much older.
WAYNE
They really thought I would forget.
He started the engine.
Before driving away, he sent one final message.
WAYNE
This isn’t about Amber.
WAYNE
It’s about what Dev did.
Wayne put the phone down and drove into the darkness.
7. The Truth Waiting in the Dark
Back at Dev’s house, Amber stood completely still.
DEV
Amber, there’s something I should have told you a long time ago.
Before he could continue, the lights went out.
The room fell into complete darkness.
Amber grabbed Dev’s hand.
Then came three slow knocks at the front door.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Neither of them moved.
DEV: Don’t open that door.
A shadow moved beneath the doorway.
Amber’s phone suddenly vibrated.
One new message.
“Ask Dev who I was before you knew him.”
Amber slowly raised her eyes toward Dev.
For the first time, she wasn’t wondering what Wayne wanted.
She was wondering what Dev had been hiding.
Outside, the shadow disappeared.
The door handle began to move.
Amber held her breath.
Dev said nothing.
And then…
the door slowly began to open.
