SCENE 1 — LESA WANTS TO TALK

Late afternoon. Lesa sits inside her car outside a quiet coffee shop. She stares at her phone before calling Mike.

Mike, I need to see you. There’s something I want to talk to you about, and I don’t think we should keep avoiding this conversation.

What is this about, Lesa? You sound serious.

Because I am serious. I don’t want to argue with you. I just need us to sit down and talk like two adults.

All right. Where are you?

I’m outside the coffee shop. Can you meet me here?

Give me a few minutes. I’ll be there.

Lesa ends the call and looks through the windshield. She hopes this conversation will finally bring answers.

SCENE 2 — THE CONVERSATION TAKES A TURN

Twenty minutes later, Mike arrives and sits across from Lesa. The conversation quickly becomes tense.

Hey. What’s going on?

I’m tired of pretending that everything between us is fine. Every time we have a problem, we talk about it, and then we end up right back where we started.

I don’t think things are as bad as you’re making them sound.

That’s exactly what I’m talking about. You keep telling me how I should feel instead of listening to what I’m saying.

Mike reaches across the table, but Lesa pulls her hand back. She wants him to understand her boundaries.

I want you to understand that my feelings matter, too. If we’re going to have a relationship, there has to be respect.

The conversation continues, but neither of them finds the understanding they came looking for.

SCENE 3 — A BOUNDARY CROSSED

Later that evening, Mike and Lesa are alone. The conversation takes a troubling turn as Mike refuses to respect the boundaries Lesa has clearly expressed.

Mike, I already told you that I don’t want things to go this way.

Lesa, why are you making this so difficult? I thought you wanted us to work things out.

Wanting to work things out doesn’t mean you get to make decisions for me.

Mike ignores her concerns and continues pushing past the boundaries she has expressed. What happens next is not something Lesa freely wanted or agreed to.

When the evening ends, Lesa is left feeling overwhelmed and emotionally shaken. She had wanted understanding, but instead she is left questioning whether she can trust him.

SCENE 4 — THE SILENCE AFTERWARD

The following morning, Lesa sits on the edge of her bed. Her phone lights up with a message from Mike.

You got home okay?

Lesa reads the message twice, hoping to see an apology or some acknowledgment of what happened.

How can he act like everything is normal?

Days pass. Lesa tries to return to her usual routine, but the memory of that evening continues to trouble her. She is no longer sure she can trust Mike as she once did.

SCENE 5 — SOMETHING DOESN’T FEEL RIGHT

A few weeks later, Lesa wakes up feeling worried. She checks the calendar on her phone and realizes that her period has not arrived when expected.

No. That can’t be right.

She counts the days again. Her mind begins racing through every possibility. Unable to ignore her concerns, she searches for a nearby medical clinic and schedules an appointment.

I need to find out what’s going on.

SCENE 6 — THE DOCTOR’S OFFICE

Late morning. A medical clinic in Atlanta. Lesa sits nervously in the waiting room until the receptionist calls her name.

Lesa? The doctor is ready to see you.

Inside the examination room, Dr. Williams reviews her concerns.

Good morning, Lesa. Tell me what brought you in today.

I’ve been feeling different lately, and my period is late. I don’t know if it’s stress or something else, but I’m worried.

I understand. Let’s run a pregnancy test and see what the results tell us.

Lesa follows the instructions and waits anxiously for the result. Every minute feels longer than the last.

SCENE 7 — THE RESULT

A short while later, Dr. Williams returns with the results. Lesa immediately sits up straighter.

Lesa, I have your test results.

Okay. Please tell me what’s going on.

Your pregnancy test came back positive.

Lesa freezes. For a moment, she cannot find the words to respond.

What? I’m pregnant?

The test indicates that you’re pregnant. We’ll discuss the next steps and arrange any additional testing needed to confirm the pregnancy and assess your health.

I wasn’t planning for this. I wasn’t ready for something like this to happen.

Tears gather in Lesa’s eyes. The positive test has given her an answer, but it has also raised questions she is not ready to face.

SCENE 8 — SHOULD MIKE KNOW?

That evening, Lesa sits on the couch, looking at her phone. Mike has called several times, but she has not answered.

Why are you ignoring me? Call me when you get a chance.

Lesa decides to tell him that something serious has happened.

Mike, something serious has happened, and we need to talk. But I need you to understand that what happened between us wasn’t okay. I told you I wasn’t comfortable, and you didn’t listen.

Mike begins typing, but Lesa decides to speak to someone she trusts before explaining everything.

I need you to listen to me. I went to the doctor today, and I found out something that has completely changed everything.
