Dave stared at her, knowing that the promise itself was a warning. He should have stood up and walked away. Instead, he remained seated.

SCENE 6 — THE LINE DAVE CROSSES

As the conversation continued, Danielle kept appealing to Dave’s sympathy. Dave repeatedly reminded her that he was committed to Amber. But the longer he stayed, the harder it became to end the conversation without feeling that he was abandoning someone who needed help.

Eventually, he made a terrible mistake. He agreed to stay with Danielle in a private room, convincing himself that he could still control the situation and that nobody else would ever need to know.

Dave did not respond. For the first time since meeting her, he could no longer tell himself that he had made the right decision. He thought about Amber’s smile that morning and remembered her words about honesty and trust.
