Bethany, Larry & Sharra — The Secret Agreement

BETHANY, LARRY & SHARRA:
THE SECRET AGREEMENT THAT COULD CHANGE EVERYTHING!

✦ THE BIG HOOK ✦
ONE SECRET MEETING, ONE MILLION-DOLLAR PROMISE, AND A SIGNATURE THAT COULD DESTROY THREE LIVES!

Larry believed he was free to make his own decisions about the upcoming cruise. But Bethany had other plans. After discovering that Sharra wanted to join Larry on the trip, Bethany arranged a secret meeting with her counselor.

A document was prepared, a million-dollar promise was brought back into the spotlight, and Larry was about to face a decision he had never expected. But what Bethany didn’t know was that Larry was hiding something of his own.

Before the meeting ended, one unexpected revelation could change everything.

SCENE 1 — THE COUNSELOR’S OFFICE

The office was quiet, but Bethany couldn’t stop moving her fingers nervously against the armrest of her chair. She had spent the entire morning thinking about Larry’s upcoming cruise.

The thought of him traveling with Sharra again made her feel as though everything she had worked to protect was slipping away. Across the desk, the counselor arranged several documents into a neat pile.

COUNSELOR
Bethany, before we discuss Larry’s decision, I need you to be absolutely certain about what you want from this meeting.
BETHANY
I know what I want. I want Larry to understand that he can’t keep making promises to me and then acting like those promises never happened.
COUNSELOR
And you believe Sharra joining the cruise is the reason you need to address this now?
BETHANY
Yes. Sharra wants to go with him, and I know how complicated things become whenever she is around Larry. I’m not going to sit at home wondering what is happening between them while everyone expects me to pretend everything is fine.
BETHANY
If Larry wants to take her on that cruise, then he needs to remember what he promised me. I want that promise written down. No more excuses. No more changing the subject.
COUNSELOR
Then we need to discuss the agreement properly. If Larry previously promised to provide you with a house worth millions, we need to establish exactly what he agreed to and whether the promise can be formalized.
BETHANY
I don’t want another conversation where he tells me what I want to hear. I want something that means something.
COUNSELOR
Then don’t approach this as a punishment for taking Sharra on the cruise. The agreement must be clear, voluntary, and understood by both of you.

Bethany nodded, although her anxiety remained. She had come to the office believing she could protect her future with a signature. Now she realized that getting Larry to sign might be the hardest part.

SCENE 2 — SHARRA MAKES HER MOVE

Across town, Sharra stood near a window with her phone pressed against her ear. She had already made up her mind about the cruise. She wanted to go with Larry, and she wasn’t prepared to let Bethany’s jealousy decide what she could do.

SHARRA
Larry, I wanted to talk to you about the cruise. I’ve been thinking about it, and I really want to come with you.
LARRY
Sharra, I haven’t finalized every detail yet.
SHARRA
But you haven’t said no, either.
LARRY
I know you want to come. I just don’t want another argument over something that hasn’t even happened.
SHARRA
Then don’t turn it into an argument. I’m asking you directly. Do you want me there or not?
LARRY
I’ll think about it. That’s all I can tell you right now.
SHARRA
Fine. But I hope you understand that I’m tired of always being treated like my presence is a problem.

She ended the call before Larry could respond. For a moment, Larry stared at his phone. He knew Sharra wasn’t going to let the matter rest.

He also knew Bethany would be furious if he agreed to take her. But Larry had no idea that Bethany was already preparing to confront him with a document that could change the future of their marriage.

SCENE 3 — BETHANY RETURNS HOME

Bethany arrived home carrying the folder from the counselor’s office. She placed it on the dining table and looked around the room. Everything appeared normal, yet she felt as though she were preparing for a battle.

When Larry finally walked in, he noticed the papers immediately.

LARRY
What’s all this?
BETHANY
We need to talk.
LARRY
About what now?
BETHANY
About the cruise. And about the promise you made to me.
LARRY
If this is about Sharra, I’ve already told you that I haven’t made a final decision.
BETHANY
That’s exactly why we’re talking now. Sharra wants to go with you, and I need you to understand that your decisions affect more than just you.
LARRY
I can decide who travels with me, Bethany. You don’t get to control every decision I make.
BETHANY
I’m not asking to control your life. I’m asking you to honor your word.
BETHANY
You promised me a house worth millions. If you’re going to move forward with this cruise and take Sharra along, then I want us to settle that promise properly. Everything needs to be in writing.
LARRY
A house? You’re bringing up the house again?
BETHANY
Because you keep acting as if you never promised it!
LARRY
I never said I was going to forget about it.
BETHANY
Then prove it.

Her voice trembled, but she refused to look away. Larry finally picked up the folder.

SCENE 4 — THE MILLION-DOLLAR AGREEMENT

Larry opened the document and began reading. At first, his expression showed irritation. Then his eyes moved down the page, and his face became increasingly serious.

He reached the section describing the promised property and the proposed terms of the agreement.

LARRY
Who prepared this?
BETHANY
My counselor helped me understand what needed to be discussed.
LARRY
Your counselor? So you’ve been planning this behind my back?
BETHANY
I called a meeting because I wanted advice. I knew you wouldn’t take me seriously if I simply asked you again.
LARRY
And now I’m supposed to sign this because Sharra wants to come on a cruise?
BETHANY
I’m asking you to honor your promise. The cruise has forced us to confront something we’ve been avoiding for too long.
LARRY
Those are two different things. My decision about the cruise shouldn’t determine whether I give you a house.
BETHANY
Then why have you kept making promises you refuse to put in writing?

Larry fell silent. For several seconds, neither of them moved. Bethany had expected him to shout or accuse her of being selfish, but his silence frightened her more than an argument would have.

LARRY
You want a guarantee that your future is secure, even if our relationship falls apart.
BETHANY
I want to know that the promises you make to me mean something.
LARRY
And what happens if I don’t sign?
BETHANY
Then I’ll know where I stand.

Larry looked down at the signature line. The pen lay beside his hand, waiting.

SCENE 5 — THE COUNSELOR JOINS THE CONFRONTATION

A short while later, the counselor joined them to clarify the terms of the proposed agreement. Bethany sat rigidly on the sofa. Larry remained standing beside the table, holding the document.

COUNSELOR
Larry, I want to make one thing clear. You are not being forced to sign anything. You have the right to review the terms, ask questions, and obtain independent legal advice before making a decision.
LARRY
I understand that. What I don’t understand is why this has suddenly become an emergency.
COUNSELOR
Bethany believes the promise you made is important to her financial future. She wants clarity rather than another disagreement about what was said
