EPISODE 3
BETHANY WAS TOLD “NO” BY LARRY. HER OWN FATHER SAID “NO” TOO. SO SHE BORROWED THE MONEY IN SECRET… BUT WHAT SHE PLANS TO DO WITH IT COULD CHANGE BROOKE’S LIFE FOREVER.
THE SECRET LOAN

The house is quiet.

Bethany sits alone in her home office, surrounded by financial papers, property listings, business documents, and architectural plans.

On the desk sits a folder from the bank. The loan has been approved.

But nobody knows. Not Larry. Not Mr. Newburger. Bethany intends to keep it that way—for now.

THINKING ABOUT BROOKE

Bethany slowly opens the loan folder and looks at the paperwork.

She remembers Larry refusing to invest in her business.

Then she remembers standing in front of her father, hoping he would finally support her dream. He refused too.

Bethany closes her eyes for a moment and looks toward a photograph sitting beside her laptop.

BETHANY
“Brooke deserves a chance to build something of her own.”
BROOKE’S FUTURE

Bethany opens her notebook.

At the top of the page, she writes:

“BROOKE’S SENIOR CARE — ATLANTA, GEORGIA.”

She wants Brooke to have something she can eventually manage independently.

Something that can grow with her. Something that can give her confidence and independence.

THE PROPERTY SEARCH

Bethany starts researching properties around Atlanta.

Small homes. Larger properties. Commercial spaces.

She studies every option carefully.

She knows she cannot simply purchase an ordinary house and turn it into a senior-care facility.

THE FIRST CHECKLIST

Bethany opens the Georgia Department of Community Health’s Healthcare Facility Regulation information.

She begins taking notes about Personal Care Homes and Assisted Living Communities.

She carefully compares the possibilities and considers the size, residents, services, and level of care the future facility may provide.

She writes: “CHOOSE THE RIGHT MODEL FIRST.”

NO SHORTCUTS

Bethany creates a property checklist.

Zoning. Permitted use. Occupancy. Building requirements. Accessibility. Fire safety. Local approvals. Licensing.

She circles the word “LICENSING” and underlines it twice.

BETHANY
“I’m not rushing this. And I’m not signing anything until I know the property can actually work.”
BUILDING THE BUSINESS

Bethany begins organizing the information she may need for the licensing process.

Business details. Ownership information. Facility address. Administrator information. Capacity. Staffing plan.

She also prepares operational policies, safety procedures, resident-care policies, floor plans, and supporting documentation.

Bethany knows that the exact requirements can depend on the type and size of the facility.

STAFF & SAFETY

Bethany creates a folder titled:

“STAFF BACKGROUND CHECKS & COMPLIANCE.”

She begins planning for caregivers, appropriate healthcare support, housekeeping, cooking, maintenance, and management.

Then she creates another checklist for fire alarms, emergency exits, evacuation procedures, and emergency preparedness.

BROOKE MUST LEARN

Bethany looks at the staffing plan.

She imagines Brooke running the facility one day.

Brooke cannot simply be handed a business. She has to understand the money, employees, residents, families, regulations, and responsibility.

BETHANY
“Brooke must learn every part of the business.”
START SMALL

Bethany opens a spreadsheet and begins calculating the possible startup costs.

Property. Renovation. Furniture. Beds. Kitchen equipment. Safety equipment. Insurance. Employees. Utilities. Food. Supplies. Marketing.

The numbers begin adding up.

For the first time, fear crosses Bethany’s face.

THE REASON BEHIND IT ALL

Bethany looks at Brooke’s photograph.

She knows the business is a serious financial responsibility, but she also knows why she started.

BETHANY
“Brooke doesn’t need someone to keep giving her money.”
BETHANY
“She needs something she can build with her own hands.”
THE SECRET COULD COME OUT

Bethany closes the business folder.

Larry still doesn’t know. Mr. Newburger still doesn’t know.

But Bethany knows they may eventually discover that she secretly took the loan and moved forward without their support.

She whispers to herself:

BETHANY
“They’ll find out eventually. But not until I know this can work.”

Bethany turns back to her laptop.

The official Georgia licensing application is open on the screen.

She reaches for the mouse.

Suddenly, her phone vibrates.

She looks down.

A message from the bank has appeared.

“We need to speak with you regarding your loan application and supporting documentation.”

Bethany’s face turns pale.

Her eyes slowly move toward the folder containing the paperwork—and Charlotte’s signature.

BETHANY
“Please… not now.”

Then she hears footsteps approaching her office.

Bethany quickly closes the laptop.

The door handle begins to move.

She freezes.

WHO IS AT THE DOOR?
