SCENE 1 — A PEACEFUL AFTERNOON
INT. SHAYLA’S HOUSE — AFTERNOON
Sunlight streamed through the living-room windows. Toys were scattered across the floor, and the sound of a little boy laughing filled the house.
Kai was playing with his favorite toy truck, pushing it across the carpet and making little engine noises.
Shayla stood in the kitchen, preparing something for him to eat. Every few seconds, she glanced toward the living room to make sure he was still playing safely.
SHAYLA
Kai, baby, don’t make too much of a mess. Mommy just cleaned this room!
Kai looked toward her and giggled.
KAI
Mommy! Truck!
SHAYLA
Yes, sweetheart. Your truck is very fast, isn’t it?
She smiled and returned to the kitchen. Kai continued playing, completely absorbed in his little world. He pushed his toy toward the front door, following it as it rolled farther away.
The door had not been properly secured.
Kai reached for the handle. With a little push, the door opened. He stepped outside.
The afternoon breeze brushed against his face. The road in front of the house looked like another place to explore, and Kai innocently wandered toward it.
Inside, Shayla remained unaware that her son had left the house.
Then, from somewhere outside, the sound of a heavy engine grew louder.
SCENE 2 — THE MOMENT EVERYTHING CHANGED
EXT. RESIDENTIAL ROAD — AFTERNOON
A large truck approached the street at high speed. The driver concentrated on the road ahead, unaware of the little boy who had wandered into its path.
Kai stood near the roadside, distracted by something on the ground.
A horn sounded. The driver reacted immediately, but there was barely enough time to respond.
A sudden crash shattered the peaceful afternoon.
The truck stopped farther down the road. For one terrible moment, everything seemed silent. Then someone shouted for help.
Inside the house, Shayla heard the noise. She froze, her heart racing as she hurried toward the front door.
SHAYLA
Kai? Baby, what was that?
She stepped outside and looked toward the road. What she saw made her stop breathing for a moment.
Kai was lying on the ground, badly injured. The truck stood nearby, and the driver had climbed down, visibly shaken.
SHAYLA
KAI!
She dropped beside her son, her hands trembling as she tried to understand what had happened.
SHAYLA
Baby, Mommy is here! Can you hear me? Please, sweetheart, look at me!
Kai did not respond.
SHAYLA
Somebody help us! Please! Somebody call an ambulance!
A neighbor ran toward them while another person reached for a phone. Shayla gently held Kai close, calling his name again and again.
SHAYLA
You were just playing inside. You were right there with me. How did this happen, baby?
Her voice broke. She looked toward the open front door, unable to understand how a few seconds could have changed everything.
TRUCK DRIVER
Ma’am, I’m so sorry. I didn’t see him until—
SHAYLA
Please! Don’t talk to me right now! Just help my baby!
The driver stepped back, overwhelmed by the situation. A neighbor knelt beside Shayla and tried to comfort her while waiting for emergency assistance.
SHAYLA
Please, God. He’s just a little boy. Please don’t take him away from me.
The sound of approaching sirens finally filled the street. Shayla lifted her head, desperately hoping help had arrived in time.
SCENE 3 — THE RACE TO SAVE KAI
EXT. RESIDENTIAL ROAD — MOMENTS LATER
Emergency responders arrived and immediately began assisting Kai. Shayla stood nearby, shaking uncontrollably as the medical team worked.
SHAYLA
Please save him! He’s my son! I’ll do anything. Please, just save him!
PARAMEDIC
Ma’am, we’re doing everything we can. Please give us room to work.
Shayla stepped back, covering her mouth as tears streamed down her face.
The responders moved Kai into the ambulance. Shayla climbed inside, refusing to let anyone separate her from her child.
As the ambulance pulled away, she held Kai’s hand and whispered to him.
SHAYLA
Remember when you couldn’t sleep last night? You wanted me to stay beside you until morning.
She swallowed hard.
SHAYLA
I’m here again, baby. Mommy isn’t going anywhere. You just have to stay with me, okay?
The siren echoed through the streets as the ambulance raced toward the hospital. Shayla watched the medical team carefully, searching their faces for any sign of hope.
SHAYLA
You’re going to come home with me. We’re going to play with your trucks again. I’ll make your favorite food, and we’ll watch your cartoons.
Her voice became quieter.
SHAYLA
You haven’t even told Daddy about all the things you learned today.
Anthony loved his son more than anything. Shayla could not bear the thought of taking their future away from him.
SHAYLA
Please, sweetheart. Daddy needs you, too.
The ambulance turned into the hospital entrance. The rear doors opened, and the medical team quickly transferred Kai inside. Shayla followed them, praying that the doctors would find a way to save him.
SCENE 4 — THE NEWS NO MOTHER WANTS TO HEAR
INT. HOSPITAL EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT — AFTERNOON
The hospital staff rushed Kai into the emergency treatment area. Shayla tried to follow, but a nurse gently stopped her at the entrance.
NURSE
Ma’am, we need to treat him. Please wait here. The doctor will speak with you as soon as possible.
SHAYLA
No, please! I need to stay with him. He’s frightened when I’m not around.
NURSE
I understand. We’re going to do everything we can.
The doors closed. Shayla stood in the corridor, staring at them. She began pacing back and forth, clasping her hands together as she prayed.
SHAYLA
Please let him be okay. Please let the doctor come out and tell me he’s going to survive.
Minutes passed. She sat down, then immediately stood up again. Finally, a doctor emerged. His expression was serious.
SHAYLA
Doctor, how is my baby? Is he awake? Can I see him?
DOCTOR
Ma’am, I’m very sorry. We tried everything we could to save your son.
Shayla stared at him.
SHAYLA
What do you mean? What are you saying?
DOCTOR
Unfortunately, his injuries were too severe. We couldn’t save him.
For several seconds, Shayla did not move. It was as if the words had reached her ears but her mind refused to understand them.
SHAYLA
No. That can’t be true. I brought him here. I came as fast as I could!
DOCTOR
I’m deeply sorry.
SHAYLA
He’s my baby! He’s only a little boy!
Her knees weakened, and a nurse helped her into a chair.

I promised I would protect him. How am I supposed to go home without him?
The doctor gave her a moment before offering to let her see Kai. Shayla slowly stood and followed him.

Mommy is here, baby. You can wake up now. We need to go home.

Shayla sat alone outside the room, holding her phone. Anthony’s name appeared on the screen.
ANTHONY
Hey, Shayla. What’s going on? Is everything okay?
SHAYLA
Anthony…
ANTHONY
Shayla? What’s wrong? Why are you crying?
SHAYLA
You need to come to the hospital.
ANTHONY
The hospital? Why? What happened to you?
SHAYLA
It’s Kai.
A terrible silence followed.
ANTHONY
What about Kai? Is he sick? Did something happen?
SHAYLA
There was an accident. He went outside, and a truck hit him.
ANTHONY
What? No! How is he? Is he breathing? Tell me he’s okay!
Shayla could not find the words.
ANTHONY
Shayla, answer me! What did the doctors say?
SHAYLA
Anthony… I’m sorry. They couldn’t save him.
Anthony went silent. He shook his head, refusing to believe what he had heard.
ANTHONY
No, Shayla. Don’t say that. Please tell me you’re mistaken.
He ended the call without saying another word, grabbed his keys, and rushed toward the door.
ANTHONY
Kai, please be okay. Daddy is coming.
He remembered teaching Kai new words, carrying him around the house, and promising that he would always be there to protect him.
He reached the hospital and hurried inside.
ANTHONY
I’m looking for my son, Kai! Where is he? Where’s Shayla?
A nurse directed him toward the emergency department. Anthony ran down the corridor until he saw Shayla sitting outside the room.
ANTHONY
Where is my son?
SHAYLA
Anthony, I’m sorry.
ANTHONY
No. Take me to him.
She slowly led him into the room.
SCENE 6 — A FATHER’S UNBREAKABLE LOVE
INT. HOSPITAL ROOM — EVENING
Anthony entered the room. For a moment, he could not move. Kai lay quietly on the hospital bed.
Anthony approached him slowly and gently touched his son’s hand.
ANTHONY
Hey, little man. Daddy’s here.
He waited.
ANTHONY
You remember what I told you? No matter what happens, Daddy always comes back for you.
He lowered his head.
ANTHONY
I came back, son. I’m right here.
Shayla stood near the doorway, unable to watch without breaking down again.
ANTHONY
You were supposed to grow up, Kai. You were supposed to run around this house, make a mess, and drive your mother crazy.
He tried to smile, but the expression disappeared almost immediately.
ANTHONY
You were supposed to ask me a thousand questions every day. And I was supposed to pretend I knew all the answers.
He held Kai’s hand between both of his.
ANTHONY
I had so many things planned for us. I wanted to teach you how to ride a bicycle. I wanted to take you to the park. I wanted to be there when you started school.
He stopped speaking.
ANTHONY
You were my whole world, son.
Shayla approached him and placed a hand on his shoulder.
ANTHONY
How did this happen? He was at home. He was supposed to be safe.
SHAYLA
He was playing inside. I only turned away for a moment.
ANTHONY
And then?
SHAYLA
The door was open. He must have followed his toy outside. I heard the crash, Anthony. I ran out, but he was already on the ground.
ANTHONY
You got him here. You tried to help him.
SHAYLA
But I couldn’t save him!
Anthony looked at her, his own grief making it difficult to speak.
ANTHONY
Neither of us could have imagined this happening.
He stood and pulled Shayla into an embrace. For the first time since the accident, they allowed themselves to grieve together.
SHAYLA
What are we going to do now, Anthony?
He had no answer.
ANTHONY

SHAYLA

Eventually, they left the room together. Neither of them looked back immediately. They were afraid that if they did, they would find another reason to stay.
SCENE 7 — THE EMPTY HOUSE
INT. SHAYLA’S HOUSE — NIGHT
The house was quiet when Anthony and Shayla returned. Kai’s toys were still scattered across the living-room floor. His little toy truck rested near the front door.
Shayla stopped as soon as she saw it. She slowly bent down and picked it up.
SHAYLA
Anthony, look. He was playing with this before everything happened.
Anthony stared at the toy, remembering Kai pushing it across the floor earlier that day.
ANTHONY
He was so happy this morning.
Shayla walked into the living room and sat on the carpet where Kai used to play.
SHAYLA
I keep thinking he’s going to come running out of his room.
ANTHONY
I know.
SHAYLA
How do we live here without him?
Anthony had no answer. He looked around at the photographs on the wall, the little shoes near the entrance, and the blanket Kai always carried around the house.
He picked up a photograph of himself holding Kai as a baby.
ANTHONY
I remember this day. You were laughing because I couldn’t figure out how to put his little clothes on.
SHAYLA
You put his shirt on backward.
ANTHONY
And you told everybody I was going to be
