shk ) Dave hired a new assistant, but Amber soon discovered something that made her question everything.
Dave and Amber: The Past That Refused to Stay Buried
Dave believed his life was finally moving in the right direction. His career was growing, new opportunities were appearing, and for the first time in a long time, he felt that he was building something stable. He wanted Amber beside him through all of it.
But Amber was not looking at the future the same way.
She loved Dave, but love had never completely erased the wounds left behind by betrayal. Every unexplained change, every new woman around Dave, and every decision that seemed harmless to him could awaken memories Amber had desperately tried to bury.
And when Dave announced that he had hired a new assistant, Amber tried to convince herself that it was simply business.
But something inside her told her this situation was going to become much bigger than business.
1. A New Assistant Changes Everything
The afternoon was quiet when Dave sat across from Amber and explained the latest development at work. His company was becoming busier, and he could no longer handle every meeting, phone call, and schedule by himself.
“I needed somebody who could help me manage everything,” Dave explained calmly. “It is just a professional decision.”
Amber nodded, but her expression slowly changed.
“Who did you hire?”
Dave gave her the name of the new assistant and began explaining her responsibilities. He spoke naturally, almost casually, because to him there was nothing suspicious about the situation.
But Amber stopped listening.
She remembered what happened in the past. She remembered trusting someone completely, only to discover that the truth had been hidden from her. She remembered promises that sounded sincere until they suddenly meant nothing.
Dave noticed the silence.
“You’re doing it again,” he said.
“Doing what?”
“Turning something normal into something connected to the past.”
Amber looked at him.
“And maybe you’re doing the opposite,” she replied. “Maybe you’re calling something normal because you don’t understand what it looks like from my side.”
The room became silent.
2. Amber’s Fear Was Bigger Than Jealousy
Amber never wanted to become the woman who constantly questioned her partner. She hated feeling suspicious. She hated checking details and wondering whether every small change meant something more.
But betrayal had changed the way her mind worked.
She could not simply erase painful memories because Dave wanted to move forward.
That evening, Amber finally opened up.
“I don’t want to control you, Dave,” she said. “That’s not what this is about.”
Dave remained quiet.
“I want to know that I’m safe with you,” Amber continued. “When something reminds me of what happened before, I get scared. I know it may not be fair to you, but I can’t pretend those feelings don’t exist.”
Dave’s expression softened.
For the first time, he understood that Amber’s reaction was not simply about another woman working beside him.
It was about fear.
Fear that the same story would happen again.
Fear that she would trust someone again and eventually discover that she had ignored every warning sign.
Dave reached for her hand.
“But I can’t spend the rest of my life paying for something I didn’t do,” he said.
Amber looked down.
That sentence hurt because part of her knew he was right.
3. Dave Wants a Future, Not Another Argument
The next morning, Dave arrived at work determined to focus on his career. He had meetings scheduled, important calls to make, and several opportunities that could change the direction of his business.
He wanted success.
More importantly, he wanted stability.
Dave believed that if he kept allowing the past to dictate his decisions, he would never be able to build the future he wanted with Amber.
His new assistant entered the office and immediately began organizing his schedule. She was professional, efficient, and focused entirely on her responsibilities.
From Dave’s perspective, everything was exactly as it should be.
But Amber’s perspective was different.
Later that day, she unexpectedly stopped by Dave’s workplace. She saw the assistant standing beside Dave’s desk, laughing about something he had said.
The conversation was innocent.
At least, it appeared that way.
Amber did not say anything.
She simply turned around and left.
When Dave noticed her leaving through the glass doors, his heart dropped.
He already knew what she was thinking.
And he was tired of having to prove that every ordinary moment was exactly what it appeared to be.
4. Wayne Sees What Neither of Them Wants to Admit
Wayne had known Dave and Amber long enough to recognize the tension between them. He could see that they still cared about each other, but he could also see that both were protecting themselves in different ways.
Dave protected himself by refusing to live in the past.
Amber protected herself by refusing to forget it.
Wayne eventually found Dave alone and decided to speak honestly.
“You keep telling yourself Amber needs to let go,” Wayne said. “But maybe what she really needs is to see something different from you.”
Dave frowned.
“What am I supposed to do?”
“Show her that she doesn’t have to guess.”
Dave thought about those words.
Meanwhile, Wayne also spoke with Amber.
“You can’t punish Dave forever for somebody else’s mistakes,” he told her.
Amber became defensive.
“I don’t punish him.”
Wayne looked at her carefully.
“Maybe not intentionally.”
That answer stayed in Amber’s mind long after the conversation ended.
For the first time, she wondered whether her fear was protecting her—or slowly destroying the relationship she was trying so hard to protect.
5. The Conversation That Finally Explodes
That night, Dave returned home and immediately knew something was wrong.
Amber was sitting quietly in the living room.
“You saw me at the office,” Dave said.
Amber looked up.
“Yes.”
“And you left without saying anything.”
“I didn’t want to cause a scene.”
Dave sighed.
“But you already decided what you saw meant.”
Amber stood up.
“You don’t understand!”
“Then help me understand!”
Her eyes filled with emotion.
“I am trying, Dave! I’m trying every day. But you keep asking me to trust like nothing ever happened.”
“And you’re asking me to live like I’m guilty when I haven’t done anything!”
The argument became more emotional.
Neither of them wanted to hurt the other, but both were speaking from wounds instead of calmness.
Finally, Amber whispered, “I’m scared that one day I’ll wake up and realize I trusted you for nothing.”
Dave’s anger disappeared.
He looked at her for several seconds.
Then he quietly answered, “And I’m scared that no matter what I do, you’ll never believe me.”
Neither spoke.
For the first time, they realized they were both afraid of losing the same relationship.
6. One Message Brings the Past Back
The following day, things appeared calmer.
Dave decided that instead of arguing, he would give Amber complete clarity about his professional life. He believed transparency could help rebuild the trust between them.
But just as he began to believe the worst had passed, his phone received a message.
Dave looked at the screen.
His expression immediately changed.
The message was from someone connected to his past.
Someone Amber had never expected to hear from again.
Dave stared at the message without responding.
He knew he needed to tell Amber.
But he also knew exactly how she might react.
Before he could decide what to do, Amber walked into the room.
She saw the expression on his face.
“What happened?”
“Nothing.”
Amber’s eyes narrowed.
“Dave.”
He put the phone down.
“I said it’s nothing.”
But this time, Amber didn’t argue.
She simply walked away.
And somehow, her silence frightened Dave more than her anger ever had.
7. The Truth They Were Both Afraid to Face
That evening, Wayne received a phone call from Dave.
Dave explained everything.
Wayne listened carefully before asking one question.
“Are you hiding the message because there’s something wrong with it, or because you’re afraid of what Amber will think?”
Dave remained silent.
That silence answered the question.
Meanwhile, Amber sat alone, thinking about everything that had happened. She realized that her greatest fear was not actually the new assistant.
It was the possibility that Dave might become the person she had spent so long trying to recover from.
But Dave had his own fear.
He feared that no matter how much he changed, Amber would always see the man he used to be.
Later that night, Dave finally walked toward Amber.
He held his phone in his hand.
“I need to show you something,” he said.
Amber slowly looked up.
Dave placed the phone in front of her.
“This is the message I received today.”
Amber stared at the screen.
Her face suddenly changed.
She looked at Dave.
“Why would this person contact you now?”
Dave shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Amber read the message again.
Then another notification appeared.
This time, it wasn’t from the same person.
It was a message containing information about Dave’s new assistant—and a detail about her connection to his past that Dave had never known.
Amber slowly turned toward Dave.
“Dave… you need to tell me the truth. How much do you actually know about her?”
Dave stared at the screen, completely stunned.
Because suddenly, the woman he thought he had hired for his future might have been connected to a chapter of his past that he thought was already buried.
And this time, neither Dave nor Amber could tell whether the past had returned by accident—or whether someone had deliberately brought it back.
