THE DOOR SHE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO KNOCK ON

THE HOOK
The door slammed shut behind Sharra. She stood frozen in the hallway, her hands trembling and her eyes filled with tears. She had walked into Newburgh’s office believing he might save her mother. Instead, he had thrown her out. But Sharra didn’t know that, moments after she left, Newburgh made a secret phone call that would uncover a truth buried for six years.
EXT. BETHANY’S HOUSE — THE PREVIOUS DAY

A cold wind moved through the trees. Sharra stood at Bethany’s front door, exhausted and desperate. She knocked twice. The door opened. Bethany stood there. The moment she saw Sharra, her expression hardened.

SHARRA
Bethany… please. I need your help.
BETHANY
Why are you here?
SHARRA
It’s about my mom. They arrested her. She’s sick, Bethany. Her health is getting worse.
BETHANY’S ANSWER

Bethany looked away. For one brief moment, Sharra thought she might help. But the old anger returned.

BETHANY
Go directly to my dad, Newburgh. If he can do something, that’s a different story. I can’t help you.

The door slowly closed. Sharra remained standing outside. She wiped away her tears and whispered to herself.

SHARRA
Then Newburgh is my only chance.
INT. NEWBURGH’S OFFICE — MORNING

The next morning, Sharra entered Newburgh’s office. She stood in front of his desk with her hands folded. Newburgh looked at her coldly.

SHARRA
Mr. Newburgh… please help me get my mom out of jail. She’s not well, and her health is getting worse.
NEWBURGH
You came here expecting me to help you?
SHARRA
I have nowhere else to go. Please.
NEWBURGH
I don’t have time for this. Get out of here.
THE CONFRONTATION

Sharra refused to leave immediately. Her voice broke as she begged one last time.

SHARRA
I’m not asking you to forget everything. I’m asking you to help my mother.
NEWBURGH
You’ve spent your whole life hurting my daughter, and now you’re coming to me asking for help?

Sharra lowered her head. She knew there was nothing more she could say. She turned toward the door. But before she left, Newburgh looked at her strangely. For a moment, it seemed as if he remembered something.

FIRST TWIST

The moment Sharra left, Newburgh opened an old drawer. Inside was a photograph of Bethany and Sharra from six years ago. Newburgh turned the photograph over. Something was written on the back. His face suddenly changed. He immediately reached for his phone.

NEWBURGH
Get me the records from six years ago. All of them.

He paused. Then he added one more sentence.

NEWBURGH
Not Bethany’s. Sharra’s.
INT. DETENTION CENTER — NIGHT

Sharra’s mother sat alone in her cell. She looked weak. Suddenly, a guard appeared.

GUARD
You have a visitor.
SHARRA’S MOTHER
Sharra?
GUARD
No. A man.

The door opened. Newburgh walked inside.

THE BIG REVEAL

Newburgh placed an old file on the table. Sharra’s mother stared at it. Inside were documents that appeared to prove something impossible. According to the records, she was never supposed to be arrested. Someone had deliberately put her there. Newburgh leaned closer.

NEWBURGH
I’m saying someone wanted you here.

Her face turned pale. She whispered one question.

SHARRA’S MOTHER
Who?
FINAL SUSPENSE

Later that night, Sharra received a mysterious phone call.

Her mother’s frightened voice came through the phone.

SHARRA’S MOTHER
Sharra… don’t trust Bethany.

The call suddenly ended.

Seconds later, a message appeared on Sharra’s phone.

ASK NEWBURGH WHAT HAPPENED SIX YEARS AGO.

Sharra looked toward the window. A black car was parked across the street. Its headlights turned on.

Then someone knocked on her apartment door.

KNOCK. KNOCK. KNOCK.

Sharra reached for the lock.

Suddenly, Newburgh’s voice came through her phone.

NEWBURGH
Sharra… whatever you do, DON’T OPEN THAT DOOR.

Sharra froze.

A piece of paper slowly slid underneath the door.

She picked it up.

One sentence was written on it:

“YOUR MOTHER WASN’T THE ONE WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO GO TO JAIL.”

Sharra’s face turned pale.
