The Titanic Nightmare: Bethany, Larry, and Purnell’s Darkest Secret

THE TITANIC NIGHTMARE:
Bethany, Larry, and Purnell’s Darkest Secret

Some secrets can survive for years. But when the ocean begins to reveal the truth, nobody can escape the past.

SCENE 1 — THE DREAM VACATION

The Titanic sailed across the endless Atlantic Ocean, its enormous lights shining against the darkening sky. Music floated through the grand halls, wealthy passengers laughed over dinner, and the ocean breeze carried the promise of an unforgettable vacation.

Bethany stood near the ship’s railing, watching the waves sparkle beneath the moonlight. She had dreamed of a peaceful trip with Larry and Purnell, but something about the journey made her uneasy.

Larry approached her with two glasses of juice.

LARRY

“Here you go. You’ve been standing here for almost an hour. Aren’t you supposed to be enjoying your vacation?”

Bethany accepted the glass but barely looked at it.

BETHANY

“I am enjoying it. I just have this strange feeling that something is going to happen.”

Larry chuckled softly.

LARRY

“We’re on the most famous ship in the world. We have beautiful rooms, delicious food, and the entire ocean in front of us. What could possibly go wrong?”

Bethany looked directly into his eyes.

BETHANY

“Promise me something. If anything strange happens tonight, you’ll believe me.”

Larry’s smile disappeared.

LARRY

“Bethany, you’re starting to scare me. What are you talking about?”

Before she could answer, Purnell appeared behind them.

He wore a confident smile, but his eyes remained fixed on Bethany.

PURNELL

“Everything all right over here? Or are you two having another one of your secret conversations?”

Bethany immediately stepped away from Larry.

BETHANY

“We were just talking.”

Purnell moved closer, lowering his voice.

PURNELL

“Good. Because some conversations are better left unfinished.”

Larry frowned.

LARRY

“What exactly is that supposed to mean?”

Purnell smiled at him.

PURNELL

“You’ll understand soon enough.”

Then he walked away, leaving Bethany staring after him with growing fear.

She knew Purnell was not supposed to be on this trip.

And she knew exactly why he had followed them.

SCENE 2 — THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

Hours later, the ship grew quieter. Most passengers had returned to their cabins, while a few remained on the upper deck enjoying the cold ocean breeze.

Bethany slipped away from her room without telling Larry.

She followed a narrow passage toward the rear of the ship, where Purnell had sent her a mysterious message.

“Meet me near the swimming area. Come alone. We need to finish what happened last summer.”

Her hands trembled as she read it again.

When she arrived, Purnell was already waiting beside the water.

PURNELL

“You came.”

BETHANY

“You said you would leave us alone if I did what you asked.”

Purnell tilted his head.

PURNELL

“And you believed me?”

Bethany stepped backward.

BETHANY

“I’m warning you, Purnell. Larry has nothing to do with what happened.”

PURNELL

“That’s where you’re wrong. Larry is the reason I came here.”

Bethany shook her head.

BETHANY

“No. You promised you wouldn’t tell him.”

Purnell laughed bitterly.

PURNELL

“I made a lot of promises last summer. You were the one who decided to forget them.”

He moved toward the swimming area and stepped into the water near the edge.

Bethany followed cautiously, desperate to keep the conversation quiet.

Then Purnell suddenly lost his footing in the churning water. He reached for the side, splashing wildly.

BETHANY

“Help! Somebody help us!”

Purnell caught the edge and pulled himself upright, furious at her reaction.

PURNELL

“Shut up! Do you want the whole ship to hear us?”

Bethany screamed even louder.

BETHANY

“Stay away from me!”

Her voice echoed across the deck.

From the nearby corridor, Larry heard her cries.

He immediately ran toward the sound.

SCENE 3 — THE FIGHT ON THE DECK

Larry arrived just as Purnell climbed out of the water. Bethany stood against the railing, trembling.

LARRY

“Bethany! What happened?”

He rushed to her side before turning toward Purnell.

PURNELL

“Nothing happened. She’s being dramatic.”

LARRY

“Then why was she screaming for help?”

Purnell wiped the water from his face.

PURNELL

“Ask her. She’s the one who dragged me out here.”

Larry looked at Bethany.

LARRY

“Is that true?”

Bethany struggled to speak.

BETHANY

“Larry, please. We need to leave.”

Purnell stepped between them.

PURNELL

“You don’t get to leave until you tell him the truth.”

Larry grabbed Purnell by the shoulder and pushed him away from Bethany.

LARRY

“You don’t threaten her. Do you understand me?”

Purnell’s expression hardened.

PURNELL

“You have no idea who you’re protecting.”

Larry shoved him again.

Purnell suddenly struck Larry, knocking him off balance. Larry fell against a wooden bench, and the two men began struggling across the deck.

Bethany screamed for them to stop.

BETHANY

“Larry! Please! Don’t do this!”

Purnell forced Larry backward, landing several punches before Larry managed to push him away.

Larry struggled to his feet, breathing heavily.

LARRY

“What have you done to her?”

Purnell stopped.

For the first time that night, his expression changed.

He leaned toward Larry and whispered something that made Larry go completely still.

PURNELL

“You should’ve never brought her here.”

Larry stared at him.

LARRY

“What did you just say?”

Purnell glanced toward Bethany.

PURNELL

“Bethany, tell him what happened last summer.”

Bethany’s face turned pale.

BETHANY

“Please don’t.”

PURNELL

“Tell him!”

A sudden shudder traveled through the ship. The deck vibrated beneath their feet, and a distant metallic groan rose from somewhere below.

All three turned toward the ocean.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then a woman’s scream echoed from the lower levels.

Purnell immediately ran toward the staircase.

LARRY

“Hey! Get back here!”

But Purnell was already gone.

Larry turned toward Bethany.

LARRY

“Tell me what’s happening. Right now.”

Bethany’s eyes filled with tears.

BETHANY

“I never wanted you to find out this way.”

SCENE 4 — THE PHOTOGRAPH

Before Larry could demand an explanation, a crew member hurried onto the deck. He looked frightened and carried an old photograph in one hand.

CREW MEMBER

“Excuse me. Are either of you Bethany?”

Bethany stepped backward.

BETHANY

“Why?”

The crew member held up the photograph.

It showed Bethany standing beside Purnell in front of a building. They appeared much younger, and Purnell’s arm rested across her shoulders.

Larry took the photograph.

His expression changed immediately.

A date was written across the bottom.

Three years earlier.

Larry looked at Bethany, then at the photograph.

LARRY

“This says you were together three years ago.”

Bethany said nothing.

LARRY

“You told me we met for the first time two years ago. You said you barely knew him before that.”

BETHANY

“Larry, I can explain.”

LARRY

“Then explain!”

The crew member nervously glanced toward the staircase.

CREW MEMBER

“I found this inside an envelope near the lower-deck corridor. There was another message with it.”

He handed Larry a folded piece of paper.

Larry opened it.

The message contained just one sentence.

The woman who boarded this ship is not the woman you think she is.

Larry read it twice.

LARRY

“What does this mean?”

Bethany reached for the paper, but Larry pulled it away.

BETHANY

“Please, you have to trust me.”

LARRY

“You lied about knowing Purnell. You lied about your past. And now somebody is leaving photographs and threatening messages for us. What am I supposed to believe?”

Bethany lowered her head.

BETHANY

“I was trying to protect you.”

Larry stared at her.

LARRY

“From Purnell?”

She hesitated.

BETHANY

“From both of us.”

Before Larry could respond, the crew member suddenly grabbed his arm.

CREW MEMBER

“You need to come with me. There’s something you should see.”

Larry looked toward Bethany.

LARRY

“Don’t move. We’re finishing this conversation.”

He followed the crew member down the staircase.

Bethany remained alone on the deck, listening to the ocean crash against the hull.

Then she heard footsteps behind her.

SCENE 5 — THE LIGHTS GO OUT

Purnell emerged from the shadows. His clothes were still wet, and his face carried a cold, unsettling smile.

PURNELL

“So he found the photograph.”

Bethany turned toward him.

BETHANY

“What have you done?”

PURNELL

“Nothing he wasn’t going to discover eventually.”

BETHANY

“You promised me you wouldn’t involve Larry.”

Purnell laughed under his breath.

PURNELL

“You still think this is about you and me? Bethany, you have no idea how much bigger this is.”

She stepped away from him.

BETHANY

“What do you want?”

Purnell looked toward the dark windows.

PURNELL

“The truth. All of it.”

Bethany’s voice dropped to a whisper.

BETHANY

“If you tell Larry what happened that night, you’ll destroy everything.”

Purnell moved closer.

PURNELL

“Everything was destroyed the moment you stepped onto this ship.”

Suddenly, every light on the deck flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the entire area went black.

Passengers screamed in the distance. The ship shuddered again, harder this time. Somewhere below, glass shattered, followed by the thunderous slam of a metal door.

Bethany reached for the railing.

BETHANY

“Purnell?”

There was no answer.

BETHANY

“Purnell, stop playing games!”

A hand suddenly caught her wrist.

Bethany gasped and tried to pull away.

UNKNOWN VOICE

“Don’t scream. Not unless you want them to find you.”

She recognized the voice, but it couldn’t possibly belong to the person she was thinking of.

BETHANY

“No. You’re supposed to be dead.”

The hand released her.

A faint light appeared at the far end of the deck, revealing a figure standing beside the staircase.

Before Bethany could see the person’s face, the light vanished.

A deafening crash shook the ship.

When the emergency lights finally came on, Purnell was gone.

So was the crew member.

And a fresh trail of seawater led from the staircase toward Bethany’s cabin.

SCENE 6 — THE SECRET BENEATH THE SHIP

Larry followed the crew member through a narrow corridor below deck. The air felt colder there. Pipes rattled overhead, and the floor vibrated with the steady movement of the enormous ship.

LARRY

“Where are you taking me?”

The crew member stopped beside a locked storage room.

CREW MEMBER

“Someone came aboard with instructions to deliver a message to you if the ship encountered trouble.”

LARRY

“Who gave you those instructions?”

The crew member pulled a small key from his pocket.

CREW MEMBER

“A passenger whose name does not appear on the official list.”

He unlocked the door.

Inside, several wooden crates were stacked against the walls. An old suitcase rested on a table, surrounded by photographs, letters, and folded documents.

Larry approached the suitcase.

On top lay a photograph of himself standing beside Bethany.

He had never seen it before.

Behind it was another photograph showing Purnell standing in front of a building marked with the same symbol Larry had noticed on the envelope.

He opened a letter.

Larry, if you are reading this, Bethany has finally brought you to the place where everything began.

Larry swallowed hard and continued reading.

Do not trust the dates. Do not trust the names. Most importantly, do not believe the story you were told about the night we disappeared.

The letter ended with a name.

PURNELL.

Larry dropped the paper onto the table.

LARRY

“What is this?”

The crew member stepped into the corridor and looked both ways.

CREW MEMBER

“There’s one more thing.”

He pointed toward the far wall.

A narrow metal door stood partly open. Beyond it was a staircase descending into darkness.

Larry approached cautiously.

From below came a faint tapping sound.

Three taps.

A pause.

Then three more.

LARRY

“Is someone down there?”

A voice answered from the darkness.

UNKNOWN VOICE

“Larry
