The sound of Sharra’s scream shook the entire house.

She turned toward Bethany with anger in her eyes.

SHARRA

“You did something terrible! My mother was arrested because of you!”

BETHANY

Earlier that evening, Sharra had been sitting quietly in the living room.

SHARRA

“Hello?”

Bethany stood several feet away.

BETHANY

“Sharra… what happened?”

Sharra looked at her.

SHARRA

“My mother.”

“What about your mother?”

Sharra’s voice trembled.

SHARRA

“The police arrested her.”

Bethany’s eyes widened.

BETHANY

“What?”

Sharra wiped her tears angrily.

SHARRA

“Don’t pretend you don’t know!”

Bethany shook her head.

BETHANY

“I honestly don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Sharra pointed toward her.

SHARRA

“You knew where she was.”

BETHANY

“No.”

SHARRA

“You knew my mother was hiding.”

BETHANY

“I knew you were worried about her, but I never knew where she was.”

Sharra stepped closer.

SHARRA

“Then how did the police find her?”

Bethany had no answer.

For several seconds, neither woman spoke.

“You see? You can’t even answer me.”

BETHANY

“Because I don’t know!”

“I swear to you, Sharra, I did not give anyone your mother’s address.”

“She was trying to stay safe.”

Her voice broke.

SHARRA

“And now they took her away.”

BETHANY

“Sharra, please sit down.”

Sharra suddenly pushed her hand away.

SHARRA

“Don’t touch me!”

Bethany stopped.

Sharra began pacing around the room.

SHARRA

“My mother needed me.”

She cried harder.

SHARRA

“I should have protected her.”

BETHANY

“This isn’t your fault.”

SHARRA

“Yes, it is!”

She screamed.

“I should have known!”

BETHANY

“Sharra, listen to me. You didn’t know this would happen.”

She pointed toward the door.

BETHANY

BETHANY

“I know.”

SHARRA

“She has nobody.”

BETHANY

“She has you.”

Sharra cried harder.

SHARRA

“What am I supposed to do now?”

BETHANY

“You need to calm down first.”

BETHANY
