azm ) Bethany Turns Larry’s Miami Getaway Into a Jealousy Game by Bringing Her Ex Jessie Along—Will Larry Regret Sabotaging Their Marriage-Rebuilding Trip?

The Miami Gambit
A Marriage • A Secret • A Game of Jealousy
Chapter 1: A Marriage on the Edge
The silence inside Dr. Sterling’s therapy office was heavy enough to suffocate a room full of people. Bethany sat on the far left edge of the plush leather sofa, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, staring blankly out the third-floor window. On the far right sat Larry, slumped with his hands shoved deep into his denim pockets, slouched so low his chin practically touched his collarbone.
They had been married for four years, but the last eighteen months felt like an endless marathon through a swamp. Every conversation devolved into a battle of passive-aggressive jabs, unreturned texts, and days of icy silence.
Dr. Sterling adjusted her glasses, looking over her clipboard at the pair. “You two are locked in a fortress of routine and resentment,” she said, breaking the silence. “You don’t look at each other, you don’t talk to each other, and you’ve forgotten how to laugh together. I want you both to clear your schedules for next weekend. I’m prescribing a trip. Just the two of you. No work emails, no household chores, and no distractions. A weekend getaway to reset, re-engage, and figure out if you still want to fight for this marriage.”
Chapter 2: A Spark of Hope
When they stepped out into the crisp afternoon air, Bethany felt a tiny spark of hope light up in her chest for the first time in months. She turned to Larry with a soft, cautious smile.
“This could actually be really good for us, Larry,” she said, her voice dropping the hard edge it usually carried. “We haven’t been anywhere together since our honeymoon. It’ll cure the endless boredom, and maybe… maybe we can finally move past all this anger.”
Larry gave a vague nod, looking down at his phone. “Yeah, sure. Good idea. I’ll take care of booking the flights.”
For the next two days, Bethany was genuinely cheerful. She bought a couple of new summer dresses, picked out a pair of sunglasses, and looked forward to the sunshine. The dark clouds hanging over their home seemed to be lifting.
Chapter 3: Larry Changes the Plan
Then came Thursday evening.
Bethany was in the bedroom packing her suitcase when Larry walked into the room, tossing a confirmation printout onto the bed. “Alright, everything is set. Miami. We’re flying out Friday morning.”
“Miami sounds amazing!” Bethany beamed, folding a yellow sundress.
“Yeah,” Larry said, scratching his neck nonchalantly. “And the best part is, Purnell and his wife are coming along too. I called him yesterday, and they had some vacation days to kill. It’s going to be great. We can hit the beach, get some drinks, and Purnell and I can catch the game at the sports bar.”
Bethany froze, the fabric of her dress crumpling in her hands. She looked up at him, disbelieving. “Purnell? Your brother? And his wife?”
“Yeah. Why not? The more the merrier, right?” Larry sneered lightly.
“Larry, Dr. Sterling explicitly said a trip for us. Just the two of us!” Bethany’s voice shook as her brief hope collapsed into anger. “This was supposed to save our marriage, and you invited your brother so you don’t have to talk to me!”
“Oh, come on, Bethany, don’t make a big deal out of nothing!” Larry snapped, turning on his heel and walking out of the room. “It’s just a weekend trip. Stop overreacting.”
Chapter 4: The Therapist’s Advice
Feeling betrayed and furious, Bethany grabbed her handbag and drove straight back to Dr. Sterling’s office. She didn’t have an appointment, but the doctor made ten minutes for her seeing how distressed she was.
“He ruined it before we even left!” Bethany paced up and down the office rug, her face red. “He invited Purnell and his wife! He doesn’t want to fix anything. He’s just using them as a shield so he doesn’t have to spend a single second alone with me.”
Dr. Sterling sat back, listening quietly. “Bethany, take a breath. Why do you think he did that?”
“Because he’s a coward!” Bethany cried out. “He wants to cancel the emotional purpose of this trip without being the one to officially pull the plug. He wants me to throw a fit and say I’m not going so he can blame me for ruining it!”
Dr. Sterling tilted her head, a strange, sharp glimmer in her eyes. “If he’s playing a game to sabotage the trip, why are you letting him set all the rules? If Larry wants to play mind games… play your own move. Don’t play defense, Bethany. Make a move of your own.”
The words hung in the air, cold and calculated.
Bethany left the office with a newfound determination. She wasn’t going to spend the weekend sitting silently in the background while Larry and Purnell drank beers and ignored her. If Larry wanted to bring unexpected guests to sabotage their couple’s getaway, she would show him how a real disruption felt.
Chapter 5: Bethany Calls Jessie
That night, she met up with Jessie at a quiet coffee shop on the edge of town.
Jessie was someone from her past—a charming, easygoing man she had dated back in college. They had reconnected recently as friends, offering Bethany a shoulder to lean on during her marital crisis, though Jessie’s feelings for her had always simmered just beneath the surface.
“He did what?” Jessie asked, holding his coffee cup as Bethany explained the situation.
“He brought Purnell to make sure he doesn’t have to face me,” Bethany said, her voice dropping into a determined whisper. “Jessie, I need a favor. A big one. I want you to come to Miami.”
Jessie blinked in surprise, a smirk forming at the corner of his mouth. “You want me to crash your marriage-counseling vacation?”
“I want you to be there. I’m going to pay for your ticket and your room at the same resort,” she urged, leaning across the table. “I want Larry to realize that he can’t walk all over me. I want him to feel what it’s like to have the rules changed on him. I want him jealous. I want him furious.”
Jessie looked at her for a long moment, seeing the hurt and determination burning in her eyes. “If you’re sure about this, Bethany… I’m in.”
Chapter 6: Miami Arrivals
The heat hit them the moment they stepped out of the Miami International Airport terminal. Larry was chatting loudly with Purnell and his wife, Brooke, arguing about which car rental company to use. Bethany walked a few paces behind them, silent, holding a secretive smile close to her chest. Larry thought he had won this round. He thought he had outsmarted her and turned a reconciliation attempt into a guy’s hangout with his family.
They checked into the oceanfront resort around noon. The palm trees swayed in the coastal breeze, and the bright blue ocean stretched out as far as the eye could see.
“Alright,” Larry said as they stood in the grand marble lobby. “Purnell, Brooke, let’s dump our bags and meet down at the poolside bar in twenty minutes. Bethany, you coming?”
“Oh, I’ll be down in a bit,” Bethany said calmly, adjusting her sunglasses. “I have to meet someone first.”
Larry frowned slightly, but shrugged it off. “Whatever. Don’t take all day.”
Chapter 7: The Surprise at the Pool
Twenty minutes later, Larry, Purnell, and Brooke were seated at a high-top table by the pool, sipping cold drinks under a massive straw umbrella. Larry was mid-sentence, talking about the golf course he wanted to book for Saturday morning, when Purnell suddenly tapped his arm.
“Uh… Larry? Who is that with your wife?”
Larry turned around, his brow furrowing in confusion.
Walking across the sunlit wooden deck was Bethany, wearing a stylish wide-brimmed sunhat and an elegant white cover-up. Walking right beside her, holding a pair of aviators and laughing warmly at something she said, was a tall, fit man in a linen shirt.
Larry’s chest tightened instantly. He squinted against the bright sun, trying to process what he was seeing. Jessie.
Bethany walked straight up to their table, the open air filled with the gentle sound of crashing ocean waves and soft resort music. Jessie stood casually beside her, placing a relaxed hand on the back of Bethany’s chair.
Chapter 8: The Miami Gambit
Larry stood up so fast his metal chair scraped loudly against the wooden deck. His face turned bright red, the vein on his temple throbbing violently.
“What the hell is this?!” Larry shouted, ignoring the turned heads of other resort guests around the pool. His blood was boiling, his fists clenched tight at his sides. “Bethany! What kind of sick drama is this? Why is he here?!”
Bethany didn’t flinch. She took off her sunglasses slowly, revealing cool, calm eyes that stared right back into his fiery rage.
“Why are you so upset, Larry?” she asked, her voice impossibly smooth. “Remember yesterday when we were packing? I told you that I had a surprise waiting for you on this trip.”
Larry stepped closer, glaring at Jessie, who met his stare without flinching.
“You brought your ex-boyfriend on our marital getaway?!” Larry spat out, his voice shaking with pure, unadulterated fury. “Are you out of your mind?!”
“You brought your brother and his wife on a trip meant for just the two of us to fix our marriage,” Bethany replied, stepping up so she was standing inches from Larry, her tone dropping into a icy, sharp blade. “You wanted company, Larry. You didn’t want to be alone with me. So I made sure I wouldn’t have to be alone with you, either. Consider your surprise delivered.”
Larry stood frozen, looking from Bethany’s defiant smile to Jessie’s calm presence, and then back to Purnell and Brooke, who were sitting in shocked silence. The game he had started had completely shattered in his hands, leaving him standing in the sweltering Miami heat, completely outmaneuvered.
