The Distance Between Them

THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THEM

Bethany believed changing herself would help her find confidence again — but she couldn’t change the distance Larry still carried between them.

The Quiet Room

The room was quiet.

Too quiet.

Bethany stood near the window, staring at her reflection in the dark glass. For months, she had convinced herself that changing something about her appearance would finally make her feel like herself again.

But tonight, she was beginning to understand something painful.

Confidence could change how you saw yourself. It could not force someone else to see you differently.

Larry stood several feet away, his expression unreadable.

And between them was everything they had never managed to say.

Bethany’s Truth

BETHANY I did this for myself, Larry.

She slowly turned toward him.

Her voice was calm, but her eyes revealed how emotional she really was.

BETHANY I wanted to feel comfortable with myself again. I wanted to look in the mirror and recognize the woman staring back at me.

Larry listened without interrupting.

BETHANY The surgery wasn’t about trying to make you love me again.

A brief pause.

BETHANY It was about me.

Larry lowered his eyes.

For a moment, Bethany thought she had finally reached him.

Then he took another step backward.

That small movement hurt more than any argument could have.

Larry’s Distance

LARRY I understand that.

He looked at her.

LARRY And I’m glad you’re feeling better about yourself.
BETHANY But?

Larry hesitated.

LARRY But that doesn’t mean I’m ready to pretend everything between us is fixed.

Bethany’s expression fell.

BETHANY I wasn’t asking you to pretend.
LARRY Maybe not.

He took a slow breath.

LARRY But I need time, Bethany.

The words hung heavily in the room.

What Still Remained

Bethany wiped at the corner of her eye before the tears could fall.

BETHANY Do you know what hurts the most?

Larry remained silent.

BETHANY It’s not that you’re angry.

She looked directly at him.

BETHANY It’s that you’re standing right here, and I still feel like you’re a million miles away.

Larry’s expression softened.

But he didn’t move.

LARRY Bethany…

She shook her head.

BETHANY No. Just let me say this.

Larry nodded.

BETHANY I know I’ve made mistakes.

She admitted the choices that had hurt him and told him she still cared more than she probably should.

Larry finally looked at her.

Something in his eyes changed.

Not completely. Not enough. But something.

A Fragile Moment

Bethany reached for his hand.

Larry hesitated.

For several seconds, neither of them moved.

Then Larry allowed her fingers to touch his.

Bethany closed her eyes.

It was such a small gesture.

But to her, it meant everything.

BETHANY I don’t need you to promise me anything tonight.
BETHANY I just need you to stop pretending you don’t feel anything.
LARRY I never said I don’t feel anything.
BETHANY Then what do you feel?

Larry didn’t answer immediately.

He stepped closer.

For the first time that night, the distance between them disappeared.

Larry gently kissed Bethany. It was brief and emotional.

LARRY This is enough. I can’t go any further than this right now.

Bethany nodded slowly.

Overwhelmed by emotion, she held him tightly. Larry initially froze, but eventually placed his arms gently around her.

The Beginning Again

Larry looked over her shoulder.

Memories began rushing through his mind.

The good moments. The arguments. The laughter. The mistakes. The years they had spent building a life together.

He had spent so much time trying to convince himself that his feelings were gone.

But standing there with Bethany in his arms, he finally understood the truth.

They weren’t gone.

They had simply been buried beneath too much hurt.

Bethany eventually loosened her embrace.

BETHANY I’m sorry.
LARRY I know.
