The Night Sharra Realized

THE NIGHT SHARRA REALIZED
HER MOTHER WAS GONE

SHE DIDN’T CALL THE POLICE.

SHE CALLED BETHANY.

AND THAT DECISION WAS ABOUT TO DESTROY ALL FOUR OF THEM.

FADE IN — SHARRA’S HOUSE

Rain lashes against the windows.

The house is unusually quiet.

Sharra stands in the middle of the living room, staring at her mother’s empty chair.

Her mother’s phone is lying on the table.

Her purse is still there.

Her keys are still there.

But her mother is nowhere to be found.

SOMETHING IS WRONG.
VERY WRONG.
LARRY’S HOUSE

Sharra stands outside, soaked from the rain.

Her face is pale.

SHARRA My mom is missing.

The room goes silent.

BROOKE What do you mean, missing?
SHARRA I mean she’s gone.

Bethany exchanges a quick glance with Larry.

SHARRA NOTICES.
THE FIRST QUESTION
SHARRA Why did you two just look at each other?
BETHANY We didn’t.
SHARRA You did.

Bethany takes a careful breath.

BETHANY Sharra, we don’t know where your mom is.

Sharra looks at Brooke. Then Larry. Then Bethany again.

YOU’RE HIDING SOMETHING.
THE HALLWAY
SHARRA Where is my mother?
BETHANY I told you. I don’t know.
SHARRA You expect me to believe that?

Bethany struggles to find the right words.

BETHANY I can’t tell you where she is because I don’t know.
I KNOW YOU DID SOMETHING.
THE SLAP
SHARRA My mother trusted you.

Bethany says nothing.

SHARRA Then tell me where she is.
BETHANY I CAN’T!

The sudden shout echoes through the hallway.

Sharra stares at Bethany.

Sharra suddenly slaps Bethany across the face.

The room falls completely silent.

BETHANY I didn’t hurt your mother.
THE NOTE

Brooke finally breaks the silence.

BROOKE We need to call the police.
SHARRA Not yet.

Sharra reaches into her pocket.

She pulls out a small folded piece of paper.

Larry opens it.

“DON’T TRUST THE PERSON
WHO SAYS THEY KNOW WHERE I AM.”
THE SECRET
BROOKE You need to tell her.
BETHANY Tell her what?
BROOKE You know exactly what.

Bethany finally reveals the truth.

BETHANY Her mother came to me three nights ago.
BROOKE What?
BETHANY She said she was afraid.
THE WARNING

Bethany lowers her voice.

BETHANY She wouldn’t tell me.
BROOKE And you never told Sharra?
BETHANY Because she made me promise.

Brooke stares at her.

BETHANY That if anything happened to her…
I WAS SUPPOSED TO KEEP SHARRA
AWAY FROM THE TRUTH.
BANG!

Both girls look up.

Larry and Sharra rush toward the stairs.

They slowly climb.

Each step creaks beneath their feet.

THE DOOR IS OPEN.
THE BAG

The room is empty.

But something is sitting on the bed.

A small black handbag.

Sharra recognizes it immediately.

SHARRA Mom…

Inside are her mother’s wallet, keys, and a photograph.

It’s a picture of Sharra, Larry, Brooke, and Bethany.

But someone has been crossed out.

BETHANY.
THE PHOTOGRAPH
SHARRA Why would my mom cross you out?
BETHANY I don’t know.

Sharra turns the photograph over.

There is writing on the back.

“IF I DISAPPEAR,
ASK LARRY WHAT HAPPENED THAT NIGHT.”
BROOKE Larry?
LARRY’S SECRET
SHARRA What happened?
SHARRA WHAT HAPPENED?
LARRY Your mother found out.
SHARRA Found out what?
LARRY She found out who was lying to her.
WHO?
THE UNKNOWN CALL

Bethany’s phone begins ringing.

UNKNOWN NUMBER
BETHANY Hello?

Silence.

VOICE You shouldn’t have let Sharra find the bag.
BETHANY Who is this?

The call ends.

THE PHOTOGRAPH

A new message appears.

One photograph.

Bethany opens it.

Her eyes widen.

It’s a picture of Sharra’s mother.

ALIVE.

Sitting somewhere dark.

“ONE OF YOU KNOWS WHERE SHE IS.”
THE REVELATION

Sharra looks at Larry.

Then Brooke.

Then Bethany.

Nobody speaks.

But when Sharra looks back at the photograph…

She notices something in the background.

A CLOCK.

She recognizes that clock.

SHARRA I know where she is.
THE FINAL CALL
SHARRA She’s not being held by a stranger.

A long silence.

SHARRA She’s somewhere we all know.

Bethany’s phone rings again.

THIS TIME THE CALLER ID
ISN’T UNKNOWN.

It’s her mother’s name.

Everyone freezes.

MOTHER Sharra…
SHARRA Mom?
DON’T TRUST BETHANY.
THE LAST TWIST

The call suddenly cuts.

Sharra slowly turns toward Bethany.

Bethany’s face is completely pale.

But before Sharra can say anything—

Larry’s phone rings.

He looks at the screen.

THE CALLER IS HIS OWN NUMBER.

TO BE CONTINUED…

THE TRUTH IS CLOSER THAN THEY THINK.
