Isaiah & Mariah — Part 2

PART 2 — THE MESSAGE WITHOUT A NAME

Mariah had finally arrived in Philadelphia, believing Isaiah had taken a serious step toward their future.

But the moment she asked one simple question, the excitement began to disappear.

Where had Isaiah gotten the money for her plane ticket?

And when a mysterious message appeared on his phone, Mariah began to wonder if someone from Isaiah’s past was secretly involved.

1. Mariah Finally Arrives

Mariah’s arrival in Philadelphia was everything Isaiah had been waiting for. After days of messages, planning, and uncertainty, she was finally standing in front of him.

Isaiah smiled when he saw her. He had imagined this moment several times, but seeing Mariah in person made the situation feel much more real.

Mariah looked around before turning her attention back to him. She was excited to be there, but she also wanted answers. Isaiah had promised to make the trip happen, and now that she had arrived, she wanted to understand how he had managed it.

For a few moments, they talked about the journey, the flight, and how different everything felt now that she was finally in Philadelphia.

Then Mariah asked the question Isaiah had been hoping she would not ask so soon.

“So, where did you get the money for my ticket?”

Isaiah’s expression changed slightly. He had expected the question, but hearing it directly made him uncomfortable.

“I handled it,” he replied.

Mariah looked at him carefully. “I know you handled it. But how?”

(Isaiah had brought Mariah to Philadelphia, but he had not brought the truth with him.)

2. Isaiah Avoids the Question

Mariah did not let the subject go. She understood that tickets cost money, and she knew Isaiah had previously admitted that he could not afford one.

“You told me you didn’t have enough money,” she reminded him. “Then suddenly, you had enough to send me a ticket. That doesn’t make sense.”

Isaiah tried to keep his answer casual. He told her that he had found a way to make it work and that she did not need to worry about it.

But that answer only made Mariah more curious.

“Did somebody help you?” she asked.

Isaiah paused before answering. “I said I handled it.”

Mariah folded her arms. She was not angry yet, but she was clearly becoming frustrated. She had not expected him to explain every detail of his finances, but she did expect honesty.

“Isaiah, I’m not asking to start an argument. I just want to know who helped you.”

He looked away for a moment.

“It’s not important.”

Mariah immediately noticed the way he said it. If the source of the money was harmless, why was he so determined not to discuss it?

The more Isaiah refused to explain, the more Mariah believed the money came with a secret.

(And Mariah was beginning to realize that Isaiah’s silence might be more important than the ticket itself.)

3. The Question He Cannot Escape

Later, Mariah brought up the subject again. She had tried to move past it, but Isaiah’s behavior continued to bother her.

“You keep saying it’s not important,” she said. “But if it wasn’t important, you would just tell me.”

Isaiah sighed. He knew she was not going to stop easily.

“Mariah, I wanted you here. That’s what matters.”

“I know you wanted me here,” she replied. “But I want to know what you had to do to make it happen.”

Isaiah remained quiet.

Mariah studied his face. She began to wonder whether he was protecting someone, hiding something, or simply afraid of how she would react to the truth.

“Was it somebody you know?” she asked.

“It doesn’t matter who it was.”

“It matters to me.”

The room became quiet. Isaiah knew that every vague answer was making the situation worse, but he still could not bring himself to reveal the person who had helped him.

He had already taken a risk by bringing Mariah to Philadelphia. Revealing the source of the money could create another problem—one he was not prepared to face.

(Isaiah thought keeping the name secret would protect his plan. He did not realize that the secrecy itself was becoming suspicious.)

4. The Message Appears

Just as Mariah was about to ask another question, Isaiah’s phone vibrated on the table.

Both of them looked toward it.

Isaiah reached for the phone quickly, but Mariah noticed the sudden change in his expression. He looked at the screen, and for a moment, he seemed completely distracted.

“Who is that?” Mariah asked.

“Nobody,” Isaiah replied.

Mariah raised an eyebrow. “Nobody is texting you?”

Isaiah did not answer immediately.

The message had come from the same person who had helped him get the money. But the notification displayed only an unfamiliar number. There was no saved name, no profile picture, and no clear indication of who was behind it.

Isaiah opened the message privately.

The text was short.

“Everything handled. Don’t mention my name.”

Isaiah’s heart sank.

He had hoped the person would wait until later. He had not expected another message while Mariah was sitting right beside him.

Mariah watched him closely.

“Why are you acting like that?” she asked.

“I’m not acting any kind of way.”

“Then show me who it is.”

Isaiah locked the phone.

That small action made Mariah even more suspicious.

(The message had no name—but it had already created a question Isaiah could no longer easily avoid.)

5. Mariah Begins to Suspect Brooke

Mariah looked at Isaiah, trying to understand why he was suddenly so uncomfortable.

“Was that the person who gave you the money?” she asked.

Isaiah hesitated.

That hesitation was enough for Mariah to notice.

“So it was?”

“Mariah, leave it alone.”

She shook her head. “No, because now you’re making it look like something is wrong.”

Isaiah stood up and moved a few steps away, but Mariah continued thinking about the message. The number was unfamiliar, and the name was not visible. Still, something about Isaiah’s reaction made her think of someone from his past.

Then one possibility entered her mind.

Could the person who helped Isaiah be Brooke?

Mariah knew Brooke had been an important part of Isaiah’s life. She also knew that Isaiah had a complicated history with her. If Brooke had given him the money, that could explain why Isaiah was so determined to keep the name hidden.

“Isaiah,” Mariah said slowly, “was that message from Brooke?”

Isaiah immediately turned toward her.

“Why would you think that?”

Mariah noticed his reaction. Instead of simply saying no, he had questioned her.

“Because you’re acting strange,” she answered. “And you won’t tell me who helped you.”

Isaiah shook his head. “It’s not Brooke.”

But Mariah was not convinced.

(Isaiah had denied the name—but his reaction had made Mariah wonder whether there was more to the story.)

6. A Secret Isaiah Still Won’t Reveal

Mariah sat quietly for a moment. She wanted to believe Isaiah, but the unanswered questions were becoming impossible to ignore.

“Then tell me who it was,” she said. “If it wasn’t Brooke, why can’t you just say the name?”

Isaiah looked down at his phone.

He knew the truth. He knew exactly who had helped him. But he also knew that revealing the name could bring that person into a situation they might not want to be part of.

“I don’t want to involve anybody else,” he said.

Mariah stared at him. “But somebody is already involved. They paid for my ticket.”

Isaiah had no immediate answer.

Mariah continued, “And now they’re texting you, telling you not to mention their name. That’s not normal, Isaiah.”

He tried to reassure her that there was nothing she needed to worry about. But his explanation sounded less convincing than before.

Mariah looked toward the phone again.

“I don’t know who that person is,” she said, “but I’m going to find out.”

Isaiah’s expression became serious.

“Mariah, don’t do that.”

She immediately noticed his warning.

Why was Isaiah more worried about her discovering the name than about explaining the money?

(Mariah had arrived in Philadelphia expecting a new beginning. Instead, she had walked into a secret that seemed to involve someone Isaiah was desperate to protect.)

7. The Second Message

That evening, Isaiah stepped away to make a phone call. He kept his voice low, making sure Mariah could not hear the conversation clearly.

Mariah remained in the room, but her attention stayed on Isaiah’s phone, which he had placed face down on the table.

She did not touch it. She simply watched as Isaiah continued speaking in the other room.

Then the phone vibrated again.

Mariah looked at the screen.

Another message had appeared from the same unidentified number.

This time, the message was even shorter.

“She’s there now. Keep her away from this.”

Mariah froze.

Her eyes moved across the screen again.

She was not supposed to see the message, but now she had.

Someone knew she had arrived.

Someone knew Isaiah was with her.

And someone was telling Isaiah to keep her away from something.

Mariah slowly looked toward the room where Isaiah was standing.

For the first time since arriving, she no longer felt excited or curious.

She felt certain that Isaiah was hiding something much bigger than the ticket money.

(And the most frightening part was that the person behind the messages seemed to know exactly what was happening.)

Isaiah returned to the room and immediately noticed Mariah’s expression.

“What’s wrong?” he asked.

Mariah looked at him without answering.

Isaiah glanced toward the table.

His phone was no longer face down.

He stopped walking.

Mariah finally spoke.

“Who is telling you to keep me away from something?”

Isaiah’s face went still.

He knew the secret was no longer completely safe.

Mariah had seen the message. She had seen enough to know that someone was involved, and now she wanted the truth more than ever.

But Isaiah still had one decision to make.

Would he finally reveal who gave him the money?

Was the mysterious person really Brooke?

And what exactly was Isaiah being told to keep Mariah away from?

(The truth is closer than ever—but the name behind the messages remains hidden.)
