SCENE 1: AN UNEXPECTED ARRIVAL

The afternoon sun shines over Shayla’s quiet neighborhood. Anthony arrives with Danisha to pick up Kai. Inside, Shayla is sitting with her daughter when a knock echoes through the house.

SHAYLA

Kai, sweetheart, stay here for a moment. I’ll see who it is.

Shayla opens the door. Her expression changes when she sees Anthony standing beside Danisha. Painful memories return.

SHAYLA

Anthony?

ANTHONY

Hi, Shayla. I’m here to pick up Kai.

DANISHA

Hello, Shayla.

SHAYLA

Hello.

Her voice is quiet and distant. She steps aside, hiding the hurt she feels at seeing her former boyfriend with the woman who came between them.

SCENE 2: KAI SEES THEM TOGETHER

Kai sees Anthony and runs toward him with open arms.

KAI

Daddy!

ANTHONY

Hey, sweetheart! How are you?

Kai smiles, but her expression changes when she notices Danisha standing beside him.

KAI

Daddy, why is she here?

ANTHONY

Danisha came with me, sweetheart. We’re going to spend some time together.

KAI

Mommy, I want you to come with us.

SHAYLA

Sweetheart, Daddy is here to take you for a little while. You don’t need to worry.

KAI

No, Mommy! I don’t want to go if she’s coming with us!

ANTHONY

Kai, please listen to me. Nobody wants to upset you.

KAI

Then why did you bring her?

Kai begins crying and clings to her mother.

KAI

Mommy, please don’t make me go!

SHAYLA

It’s okay, sweetheart. I’m right here.

Shayla comforts her daughter while struggling to hold back her own tears.

SCENE 3: SHAYLA’S HIDDEN PAIN

Anthony watches Shayla holding Kai. He remembers their past and the future they once imagined together.

ANTHONY

Shayla, I understand that this is difficult, but I’m only here to take Kai.

SHAYLA

I know why you’re here, Anthony. You don’t have to explain it to me.

ANTHONY

Then why are you looking at me like that?

SHAYLA

Because I never imagined that one day I would have to stand in my own house and watch you arrive with her.

Danisha lowers her eyes. Shayla struggles to control her emotions.

SHAYLA

You were once the person I trusted the most. You were the person I thought would always stand beside me.

SHAYLA

And now, every time I see you with Danisha, I’m reminded of everything I lost.

ANTHONY

Shayla, the past is complicated.

SHAYLA

It may be complicated for you, Anthony. But for me, it still hurts.

Tears roll down Shayla’s cheeks as she looks directly at Danisha.

SHAYLA

You were my boyfriend. I loved you, and I believed in us. Then everything changed, and I had to learn how to live without you.

SHAYLA

And now you’re standing here with the woman who came between us, preparing to marry her.

SCENE 4: DANISHA FACES SHAYLA

Danisha steps forward cautiously, but Shayla turns toward her.

SHAYLA

Tell me something, Danisha. Are you happy now?

DANISHA

Shayla, I don’t want to argue with you.

SHAYLA

I’m not asking you to argue. I’m asking you a question.

SHAYLA

You have Anthony now. You’re going to marry him. You have the future you wanted. But do you ever think about what happened to me?

DANISHA

I know you’re hurt, but things didn’t happen the way you think they did.

SHAYLA

Then tell me how they happened!

Kai watches with worried eyes. Shayla notices her daughter and lowers her voice.

SHAYLA

I gave Anthony my trust. I believed his promises. When our relationship ended, I had to accept that the man I loved was no longer going to be part of my life in the same way.

SHAYLA

And now I have to watch him build a new life with you.

DANISHA

I’m not here to take anything away from you today. We’re here for Kai.

SHAYLA

Then please understand why this is difficult for me.

Danisha falls silent. The room becomes painfully quiet.

SCENE 5: ANTHONY’S DIFFICULT SILENCE

ANTHONY

Shayla, I never wanted things to become this painful.

SHAYLA

But they did, Anthony. You can tell yourself that you never wanted to hurt me. Maybe you even believe it. But that doesn’t change what happened.

ANTHONY

I know I made mistakes.

SHAYLA

Do you? Because sometimes I wonder if you remember anything about us at all.

Anthony looks at her, unable to answer immediately.

SHAYLA

Do you remember the promises you made? The plans we talked about? The way you used to tell me that I could trust you? I remember all of it.

ANTHONY

I haven’t forgotten everything, Shayla.

SHAYLA

Then perhaps that’s why it hurts so much.

She gently strokes Kai’s hair.

SHAYLA

I don’t want my daughter to grow up surrounded by sadness. I want her to feel safe and loved. But when she sees you standing here with Danisha, she doesn’t understand what is happening.

ANTHONY

I’ll talk to her.

SHAYLA

Please do. And please don’t make her feel guilty for being upset.

ANTHONY

I won’t.

SCENE 6: KAI REFUSES TO LET GO

Anthony kneels in front of Kai and speaks gently.

ANTHONY

Kai, sweetheart, look at Daddy.

Kai slowly lifts her tearful face.

ANTHONY

I love you very much. That will never change.

KAI

Then can Mommy come too?

Anthony hesitates. Kai clings more tightly to Shayla.

KAI

I don’t want Mommy to be alone.

SHAYLA

Sweetheart, Mommy will be okay.

KAI

But you’re crying, Mommy.

SHAYLA

Sometimes grown-ups feel sad, too. But you don’t have to worry about taking care of me.

KAI

I want to stay with you.

Anthony looks deeply troubled. Danisha watches quietly, realizing how much pain the situation has caused.

ANTHONY

You don’t have to decide anything because you’re scared, Kai. We can take our time.

He looks at Shayla before making his decision.

ANTHONY

Maybe we should give her a little more time.

SHAYLA

Thank you.

Anthony sits nearby without pressuring Kai to leave.

SCENE 7: SHAYLA FINALLY BREAKS DOWN

After Kai begins to settle down, Shayla steps into the hallway to collect herself. Alone, she leans against the wall and cries.

Anthony is preparing to marry Danisha. No matter how much Shayla wishes things had turned out differently, she cannot return to the past.

Anthony appears in the hallway and stops when he sees her.

ANTHONY

Shayla?

SHAYLA

Please, Anthony. Not right now.

ANTHONY

I just wanted to check on you.

SHAYLA

Why? Why do you care how I feel now, when everything between us is already over?

ANTHONY

Because you were an important part of my life.

SHAYLA

I don’t want to be a memory you feel sorry for, Anthony.

Her voice trembles as she remembers the future they once planned together.

SHAYLA

I wanted to be the person you chose. I wanted the future we talked about. I wanted our family to stay together.

SHAYLA

But now you’re going to marry Danisha, and I’m supposed to stand here and pretend that seeing you together doesn’t hurt me.

ANTHONY

You don’t have to pretend.

SHAYLA

Then don’t ask me to be okay with everything so quickly. Please just give me some time.

ANTHONY

Okay. I’ll give you time.

Anthony walks back toward the living room, leaving Shayla alone with her emotions.

SCENE 8: A PAINFUL GOODBYE

The afternoon light begins to fade. Anthony and Danisha stand near their car while Kai remains beside Shayla at the front door.

ANTHONY

I’ll come back another time when Kai feels more comfortable.

SHAYLA

That would be better.

DANISHA

I hope things become easier for everyone.

SHAYLA

I hope so, too.

Anthony turns toward Kai before getting into the car.

ANTHONY

Goodbye for now, sweetheart. Daddy loves you.

KAI

Bye, Daddy.

Anthony gets into the car with Danisha. Shayla watches them disappear down the street. Kai reaches for her mother’s hand.

KAI

Mommy, are you sad because Daddy left?

SHAYLA

I’m a little sad, sweetheart. But you don’t have to worry.

KAI

Will everything be okay?

SHAYLA

We’ll take everything one day at a time.

Kai rests her head against her mother’s shoulder. Shayla looks toward the empty driveway one last time.

Anthony’s life is moving forward with Danisha, and Shayla must find a way to move forward, too. But some heartbreak cannot be healed in a single afternoon.

As the sun disappears behind the houses, Shayla carries Kai back inside, holding her hand tightly. The door closes gently behind them.
