Opening Narration

FADE IN

For Brooke, a single night in Miami was about to become the beginning of a dangerous mystery, an unexpected romance, and a secret that had been buried for far too long.

Scene 1 — Miami Waterfront — Night

The Miami skyline sparkles beneath the dark sky. Waves crash gently against the shore as luxurious yachts glide across the water. Music drifts from nearby restaurants, and the streets glow with colorful lights.

BROOKE, twenty-two, walks alone along the waterfront. Confident. Independent. Beautiful in a way that needs no effort. Yet behind her calm expression lies a heart that has learned to be careful.

Brooke had once trusted someone with everything she had. In return, she received betrayal, broken promises, and a lesson she would never forget. Love could make you feel invincible. But it could also turn the person you trusted most into a stranger.

Since then, Brooke had promised herself one thing: nobody would ever control her heart again. Tonight, however, fate had other plans.

UNKNOWN BOY
Beautiful evening, isn’t it?

BROOKE
It is. Although, I think the company matters more than the view.

UNKNOWN BOY
Then I hope I’m good company.

BROOKE
That’s a big claim for someone I met five seconds ago.

UNKNOWN BOY
Give me five more. I might become unforgettable.

BROOKE
You’re confident.

UNKNOWN BOY
Only when I’m nervous.

BROOKE
You look nervous?

UNKNOWN BOY
Not anymore.

Their eyes meet. For a brief moment, neither says anything. The ocean continues moving behind them, but the space between them suddenly feels different.

Scene 2 — Waterfront Café — Later

Brooke and the stranger sit at an outdoor table overlooking the water. Two cups of coffee rest between them. Their conversation flows effortlessly.

BROOKE
So, what brings you to Miami?

UNKNOWN BOY
Business. A little sightseeing. And apparently, an unexpected conversation with a woman who enjoys challenging everything I say.

BROOKE
Maybe you should try saying something intelligent.

UNKNOWN BOY
I’ll save that for our second meeting.

BROOKE
Who said there would be a second meeting?

UNKNOWN BOY
You haven’t asked for the bill yet.

Brooke shakes her head, smiling. For the first time in a long while, she feels comfortable around someone new.

UNKNOWN BOY
Can I ask you something?

BROOKE
Depends on the question.

UNKNOWN BOY
Why do you look at people as if you’re waiting for them to disappoint you?

BROOKE
Because once, I believed someone was different. I thought he meant every promise he made.

UNKNOWN BOY
And he didn’t?

BROOKE
He lied. I discovered that the person I loved wasn’t the person I thought he was. Since then, I’ve learned to depend on myself. It’s easier that way.

UNKNOWN BOY
Maybe it’s safer. But easier? I don’t think protecting yourself from every possible heartbreak is the same as being happy.

BROOKE
You talk like someone who’s been hurt, too.

UNKNOWN BOY
Maybe I have.

Before Brooke can ask more, he glances at his watch.

UNKNOWN BOY
We should probably head back. It’s getting late.

BROOKE
Already? I thought you were trying to become unforgettable.

UNKNOWN BOY
I am. Leaving you wanting another conversation is an excellent strategy.

BROOKE
Or a terrible one.

They laugh and walk toward the hotel together. Neither notices the black car parked across the street. Inside, someone watches them closely. A phone lights up with a message: “He’s here. And he’s with Larry’s daughter.” The observer immediately makes a call.

Scene 3 — Hotel Lobby — Night

The hotel lobby glows with golden lights and polished marble. Brooke and the stranger enter, still talking. Near the elevators, a photograph slips from the stranger’s jacket and lands on the floor.

Brooke picks it up. It’s an old photograph of a man standing beside a woman. A small child sits between them. The photograph is faded, its edges worn from years of handling.

BROOKE
Is this your family?

UNKNOWN BOY
Something like that.

BROOKE
That’s a strange answer.

UNKNOWN BOY
It’s a complicated photograph.

BROOKE
Photographs don’t usually need explanations.

UNKNOWN BOY
This one does.

His expression becomes distant. He slips the photograph back into his jacket.

UNKNOWN BOY
Do you believe people deserve second chances?

BROOKE
Yes. But I don’t believe in giving someone the power to hurt me twice.

UNKNOWN BOY
Maybe the right person doesn’t ask for that power.

For a moment, Brooke wonders whether meeting him was the first good thing to happen to her in years. Then a sharp voice cuts through the quiet lobby.

BETHANY
Brooke!

Brooke turns. Her stepmother, Bethany, strides toward them with an expression Brooke has rarely seen before. Fear. Not ordinary worry. Not irritation. Fear.

Bethany stops when she sees the stranger. The color drains from her face.

BETHANY
No. It can’t be you.

UNKNOWN BOY
Hello, Bethany.

BROOKE
Wait. You two know each other?

BETHANY
What are you doing here?

UNKNOWN BOY
I could ask you the same thing.

BETHANY
You were told never to come near this family again.

BROOKE
What family? Our family?

BETHANY
Brooke, come with me. Right now.

BROOKE
I’m not going anywhere until someone explains what’s happening.

BETHANY
You don’t understand who you’re dealing with.

BROOKE
Then explain it to me!

UNKNOWN BOY
Perhaps you should tell her the truth before warning her about me.

BETHANY
You promised you would never come back.

UNKNOWN BOY
And you promised that the truth would never reach her.

Brooke steps backward. Her heart begins to pound. Neither answers her question: “What truth?”
