jnd ) Bethany’s Warning to Brooke About Isaiah

The Message She Almost Ignored
Sometimes the warning we dislike the most is the one that arrives just before we need it.
The Message on the Screen
It was almost midnight when Brooke’s phone suddenly lit up beside her pillow. The room was quiet, the house had already fallen asleep, and the only sound was the soft ticking of the clock on the wall.
Brooke reached for her phone expecting another message from Isaiah. For the past few weeks, his name had appeared on her screen almost every night. Sometimes they talked about ordinary things. Sometimes they talked for hours about dreams, fears, plans, and the strange possibility that two people who had met through a screen could become important to each other.
But tonight, there was a different message waiting for her.
She read it twice.
At first, she felt irritated. It sounded like advice she had heard before. She wanted to close the message and return to her conversation with Isaiah.
Yet something about the words stayed with her.
The Person Behind the Advice
The woman who had sent the message knew Brooke better than most people did. She had watched Brooke grow, make mistakes, laugh, become disappointed, and slowly begin to dream about the future.
She had never wanted to control Brooke’s decisions. She simply wanted Brooke to understand that attention could become a trap when it made a person forget everything else.
Brooke remembered those words while staring at the ceiling.
She knew the warning was not really about Isaiah alone. It was about her own choices. She had started spending less time thinking about school, skills, work, and the future.
Even simple responsibilities at home sometimes felt like interruptions because she wanted to check whether Isaiah had replied.
The problem was not that she cared about someone. The problem was that she had begun forgetting to care about herself.
A Future She Could Not See
The next morning, Brooke sat near the window with a cup of tea and opened her phone again.
Isaiah had sent several messages. He talked about how much he enjoyed speaking with her. He told her that she was different from everyone else. He described possibilities and made promises about a future that sounded beautiful when written on a screen.
Brooke smiled.
Then she stopped.
She had feelings, conversations, and hopes. But a clear future was something different. A future needed more than words. It needed time, honesty, responsibility, and real evidence.
For the first time, Brooke realized that she had been filling the gaps in her knowledge with her imagination.
That realization frightened her.
The Decision to Look Away
Brooke decided that she would not make any dramatic decisions. Instead, she would simply step back and look at her own life.
She made a small list: learn something useful, help more at home, protect her time, think about education and work, build confidence, and stop allowing every notification to decide her mood.
The list looked ordinary.
But following it was harder than writing it.
That evening, Isaiah asked why she was replying less often. Brooke almost abandoned her plan. She did not want him to think she was ignoring him.
Brooke put the phone down.
For once, she did not immediately answer.
The Door She Had Forgotten
Over the next few weeks, Brooke began changing small things.
She helped around the house without being asked. She started learning a practical skill she had been curious about for months. She organized her notes and began thinking seriously about what she wanted her future to look like.
Slowly, something unexpected happened.
She began enjoying her own company again.
Her phone was still there. Isaiah still sent messages. But his messages no longer controlled the rhythm of her entire day.
One afternoon, while cleaning an old drawer, Brooke discovered a notebook she had written in years earlier.
Inside were dreams she had almost forgotten.
She wanted to become independent. She wanted to learn useful skills. She wanted to make her family proud. She wanted to build a life that did not depend on whether another person stayed or left.
Brooke stared at the pages for a long time.
She suddenly understood that the person she needed to chase was not Isaiah.
It was the person she could become.
The Message That Changed Everything
Months passed.
Brooke became calmer. She learned that caring about someone did not require abandoning her own goals.
One evening, however, her phone buzzed again.
It was Isaiah.
Brooke’s heart began beating faster.
A second message appeared.
Brooke stared at the screen.
For a moment, the old temptation returned. She wanted answers immediately. She wanted to know what he had been hiding and why he had waited so long to tell her.
But this time, she did something different.
She did not panic.
She simply waited.
The Truth Behind the Screen
That night, Brooke placed the phone on the table and walked away.
She had finally learned something more important than deciding whether Isaiah belonged in her future.
She had learned that her future belonged to her first.
The next morning, she opened her phone.
There were three new messages.
She opened the first.
Then the second.
Her expression changed.
The third message contained a piece of information that made her sit completely still.
Brooke looked toward the notebook on her desk, then back at the screen.
Suddenly, the advice she had once considered annoying seemed different.
It had not been a command.
It had been a warning to protect her time, her goals, and her judgment until she understood the truth.
Her hand moved slowly toward the phone.
And then the screen went dark.
