The door suddenly swings open. Shara stands frozen in the doorway, one hand resting over her stomach.
Larry looks at her face and immediately realizes something is wrong. She isn’t smiling. She isn’t crying.
She looks like someone carrying a secret that has become too heavy to hide.
Neither of them knows that before the night is over, one shocking misunderstanding will change all of their lives forever.
“Shara? What’s going on? You look worried.”
Shara slowly walks inside, closes the door behind her, and takes a deep breath.
“Larry… I need to tell you something.”
“Okay. Sit down.”
Shara sits on the couch. Larry takes the seat beside her. For several seconds, neither of them speaks.
“You’re scaring me. Just tell me what happened.”
Shara finally looks up.
“I’m pregnant.”
Larry’s expression immediately changes. He sits forward, completely stunned.
“Pregnant? How did this happen? What happened?”
“I didn’t know how to tell you.”
“Shara, you can tell me the truth. I’m listening.”
Shara takes another deep breath.
“It happened when I was with Dairy. My ex. We started spending time together again, and eventually I found out I was pregnant.”
Larry remains silent as Shara looks down at her hands.
“I know this is a lot to hear, but I don’t want to keep hiding it anymore.”
“So the baby is Dairy’s?”
“Yes.”
Larry looks away for a moment. There is clearly a lot going through his mind, but he keeps his voice calm.
“I’ve made another decision too.”
“What decision?”
“I want to marry Dairy.”
Larry looks back at her.
“If that’s what you really want, then okay. You should marry him.”
“You’re not angry?”
“Why would I be? You’re making your own decision. If Dairy is the father and you want to build a life with him, then I hope things work out for you.”
Shara gives him a small, emotional smile.
But before she can respond, the front door suddenly opens.
Both of them turn.
Bethany walks inside.
She stops when she sees Shara sitting beside Larry. Then her eyes move down toward Shara’s stomach.
“What is she doing here?”
“Bethany, calm down.”
Bethany keeps staring at Shara.
“Wait… Is she pregnant?”
“Bethany, let me explain—”
“Explain what?”
Bethany looks at Larry. Her voice becomes louder.
“You got Shara pregnant?”
“No! That’s not what happened.”
“Then why is she here with you?”
“She came to tell me about the pregnancy.”
“Of course she did.”
“Bethany, listen to me. The baby isn’t mine.”
“Don’t lie to me!”
“I’m not lying.”
“Then whose baby is it?”
“Dairy’s.”
“Dairy?”
“Yes. I was with Dairy. Larry had nothing to do with it.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“It’s the truth.”
“I trusted you, Larry!”
“You’ve got the wrong idea!”
“I saw you sitting here with her!”
“Because she came to tell me she wants to marry Dairy!”
“Marry Dairy?”
“Yes.”
For a brief moment, the room becomes completely silent.
“So you expect me to believe that you were just sitting here discussing her wedding?”
“Yes!”
“I don’t believe either of you!”
“Bethany, please. Stop.”
Bethany points toward Shara.
“You came into this house and destroyed everything!”
“I didn’t do anything to you.”
“You’re carrying his baby!”
“No, I’m not!”
“Bethany! Enough!”
“You left me for her!”
“I never left you for Shara!”
“Then why does this feel like I’m the only person who didn’t know what was happening?”
“Because you’re angry, and you’re not listening.”
Shara quietly moves toward the couch. She suddenly looks uncomfortable.
“Larry…”
“What?”
“I think I need to sit down.”
Larry immediately moves toward her.
But Bethany, still overwhelmed by anger and confusion, steps forward.
“Bethany, stay where you are.”
Bethany doesn’t listen. In a sudden burst of anger, she lashes out and strikes Shara in the stomach.
“Ah!”
Larry’s face turns pale.
“Shara!”
“Larry… something’s wrong.”
“Where does it hurt?”
“My stomach…”
Larry catches Shara before she falls.
“I’m taking you to the hospital.”
“I… I didn’t mean…”
“Not now.”
Larry helps Shara toward the door and rushes her to the hospital.
The hospital doors swing open. Nurses immediately bring Shara into emergency care.
“She’s pregnant. She was hurt and she’s in severe pain.”
The medical team takes Shara away.
A few minutes later, Bethany arrives at the hospital.
“Where is she?”
“They’re treating her.”
“Larry… is the baby okay?”
“You thought the baby was mine.”
“Yes.”
“And you didn’t listen. You should have asked questions before you acted.”
Before Bethany can respond, a doctor walks toward them.
“Are you Larry?”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry, but we need to talk.”
“What happened?”
“We did everything we could.”
Bethany covers her mouth. Larry stares at the doctor.
“Unfortunately, the baby did not survive.”
Silence fills the hallway.
“No…”
Larry slowly sits down.
Behind the hospital doors, Shara lies awake, staring at the ceiling. Her eyes are filled with tears.
“Larry…”
“I’m here.”
“The baby?”
Larry struggles to speak. He reaches for her hand.
“Shara…”
She immediately understands from his expression. Tears roll down her face.
“No…”
“I’m so sorry.”
Shara closes her eyes.
“Doctor… there’s something else.”
“What?”
“The test results came back.”
The doctor looks at the report in his hand. His expression suddenly changes.
“Larry needs to know this immediately.”
“The pregnancy records don’t match what we were told.”
The doctor stares at the report.
Something about Shara’s pregnancy doesn’t make sense.
And the biggest question of the night is still unanswered…
